Album Notes
"Because I Love You" was my very first record with my group Barry Coates & the Hats originally released in 1983 on Reel Dreams Records. It featured some incredible musicians including Luis Conte on percussion, Flim(Jimmy) Johnson on bass, Sam Riney on woodwinds, Rich Eames on acoustic piano and synths, Sinclair Lott on drums and vocals by Adam Palmer. It also had Emilio Palame on fender rhodes and Rick Marvin playing some string pads.

I have always wanted to re-release this record since it was only available on vinyl but never thought the master tapes would be playable this many years later. Then I found out about a lady in Burbank California who could restore my masters by baking them in a special oven and after doing that the tapes were ready to be digitally encoded.

To me it has been so marvelous to hear this music again as I once did in the studio so many years ago. At the time of this release, one could still visit all the radio stations and get DJ's to play the record. I did it all myself and managed to get some airplay on different stations up and down the coast of California. In Los Angeles I use to hear a number of cuts off the record
every night for over a year. "China Indians" was a late night song (2am) that was played constantly on the local jazz station in Los Angeles. My main downfall was one side of the record was jazz instrumentals and the other side was mostly vocals. I thought it was a good idea at the time but turns out it might of been better to be all instrumental or all vocal as many DJ's couldn't decide what it was musically.

Anyway, it is what it is and I am so happy to finally be able to present this music to you the listener. Although the music
seems dated in some ways, it also sounds uniquely fresh and gives the listener an insight into the way musicians played in an ensemble back then as the execution of the material is so precise and not what you might hear today as so much has changed musically since then. I really hope you enjoy "Because I Love You" and thanks for listening.

I forgot to mention that the late very great Doug Sax mastered this music to record back in the 80's at the mastering lab in Los Angeles. I still have 50 or so records for sale if interested. Contact me at Barry I remember being with him and he was rewinding the master getting ready to cut the record when the tape broke and tape was flying all over the place.
This could of been a real disaster but everything worked out ok. This was my first time cutting a record so I didn't know how serious it was but from the look on his face it was. Fortunately, the tape was not wrecked and the session went on.
