ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
WHEN JAZZ/WORLD COMPOSER AND MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST BART STENHOUSE AND PERCUSSIONIST ABE STEWART FIRST CROSSED PATHS, THE MUSICAL CHEMISTRY AND DEEP FRIENDSHIP WERE IMMEDIATE.

In each other they saw a kindred musical spirit, someone else who shared a great sense of adventure and keenness to combine different musical traditions from around the world into a rich and unique art form. Their aim – to create a musical experience that would transport the listener to far off places, full of wonder, excitement and spiritual connection.

India. Here you find colours, sounds, cultures and tastes woven into an intricate tapestry with the power to draw on all of your senses and capture your soul. The essence of India and its rich musical history are the inspiration for this album. Blue Benares is the debut album for Bart Stenhouse and Abe Stewart. It reflects their deep love and passion for the improvisational music forms of Jazz, Flamenco and Indian Classical Raga and documents the fusion of these musical traditions.

Based on the east coast of Australia, Bart and Abe first embarked on a journey to India at the start of 2014, with a goal to study Indian Classical music and create an album exploring the ideas contained within Classical Raga traditions. Their travels took them to Kolkata and Varanasi, where they collaborated with local Indian musicians to create an album over an intense nine day period. Five days were set aside to rehearse the songs, with the remaining four days spent recording in the studio. The improvisational style of the album allowed each musician to bring their skill and flavour to the compositions, truly creating a unique and Indian-inspired soundscape.

The album features violin virtuoso Pandit Sukhdev Prasad Mishra, Siddha Veena virtuoso Siddharta Banerjee and All-India Radio Scholarship winner Siddhant Mishra on tabla.
