Album Notes
Consistent and deep immersion in the basic elements of jazz, its traditional components swing and blues – the very heart and soul of jazz –, playing in many differing formations, and the experience of countless performances in varying formations shaped and distinguished each of the three musicians’ careers. The audible charm and ease of their approach to the familiar language of jazz relies on just such a background, while the compositions and arrangements of this album bespeak the sincerity and devotion with which each title asserts the timelessness and depth of jazz.

Juerg Morgenthaler has received various awards at Jazz festivals as well as from the Swiss Jazz-Magazine “Jazz’n’More”. The list of stars and musicians with whom he has played is long, the most familiar include Abdullah Ibrahim, Benny Bailey, Bucky Pizarelli, Roy Hargrove, Sir Charles Thompson, Jimmy Woode, and Peter Appleyard. He began playing in traditional jazz bands at the early age of fourteen. After his graduation from the Zurich Conservatory and the “Swiss Jazz School Bern” he performed as a popular soloist and sideman in countless formations. His own combos include “J.M. Rhythm Four” and the sextet “Swiss Jazz Summit”.

Beat Baumli began to play guitar at the age of fifteen. He applied his at first self-taught skills playing in local rock and roll formations. The discovery of the legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery at the age of 23 was a life changing experience. Thus “converted” to Jazz he started studying at the “Swiss Jazz School Bern” and continued at the “Berklee College of Music” in Boston USA. Since 1987 he has been working with a variety of bands, well-known musicians of the Swiss Jazz scene, mainly in small combos, but also in Big Bands and musicals. Countless performances in Jazz clubs, at cultural venues and
social events have informed his style and refined his individual expression as a guitarist and composer/arranger.

Giorgos Antoniou was born in Athens, where he started studying the classical double bass and launched his career as a bass player. He has been living in Switzerland since 1994. During his time at the “Swiss Jazz School Bern” he soon was in demand as a double bass player. As a member of the Swiss Jazz School Big Band he performed at venues such as “Birdland” NYC and “Blues Alley” in Washington, at the Jazz Festival Bern, and at the Montreux Jazz Festival with Clark Terry, Bob Mintzer, John Lewis and Johnny Griffin. He is regularly on tour as a sideman, performing on stages from the US
to Turkey with internationally renowned musicians. He played with stars such as Benny Golson, Scott Hamilton, Roy Hargrove, Warren Vaché and is a steady member of various Swiss Jazz formations.
