ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Beam combines elements of Hip Hop, Rap, live drum and bass, Trip Hop, Ambient, and groove jazz to form deep urban textures and soundscapes improvised on the spot each night.

The band is comprised of drummer David Throckmorton (Maynard Ferguson, Diane Schuur), Paul Thompson (Stanley Turrentine), Steve Landay (Rusted Root's Jenn Wertz, Push), DJ Supa C, and Akil Esoon.

Formed in 1999, Beam pushes the boundaries of rap and traditional improvised jazz fusion to create soundscapes and textural grooves that are like no other band you've ever heard.

perfect hip hop jazz improv blend
I definitely enjoy this CD. Most jazz hip hop CDs don't find a balance: either because they're jazz musicians who don't really understand hip hop or hip hop heads who don't really know jazz but you guys get a perfect balance. And some of those grooves that you hit are straight fire. No jazz CD ever made me wanna start spittin rhymes while listening to the track. Keep doing your thing.

Some of the most choice trip hop/hip hop to tickle CD Baby's collective ear in ages. You might even swear that you're not a hip hop fan but Beam just might win you over with their live, heavily jazz-influenced groove, touched with elements of R&B. "Live" albums tend to be distracting but if ever there was an exception, "Inception" is certainly it. This band won't bombard you with the same ol' material; like refined visual artists, they know how to use "positive" and "negative" space, how to fill and not fill the spaces of silence, crafting a style that is both sophisticated and defiantly experimental- a style that breathes with you. A pure head trip for the body.

I think this cd is definetly Hot, the opening track sets the tone for the rest of the joint. Shortie is spitting some clever lyrics over bangin tracks. I give you two thumbs up.

Honest Hip Hop for true heads!
This has to be some of the most honest hip hop in the whole world right now! I had to keep in mind that this was all freestyle and the guys never pratice. There are groups that play live Hip Hop and never sound this tight WITH pratice! I love the raw sound of the CD it's self, it sounds like it was recored in some ole hole in the wall joint deep in the Pittsburgh slums. Iam blessed I got turned on to this band and ill do whatever I can to help spread this one of a kind brand of Hip Hop! Peace!

solid grooves
This is fantastic hip hop. Beam definitely have a groove all their own. Inception has exceptional sound quality for a live album, and each song is more original than the last. Intensely original music with some tasty grooves. Well done.
