Horizontal Fall

by Gerry Beckley

Solo albums from America's Gerry Beckley are rare events, (it's been 11 years since "Van Go Gan") but worth the wait. "Horizontal Fall" is an eclectic collection of finely crafted, heartfelt, interestingly arranged, well played songs.

Album Notes
Gerry Beckley is a founding member of the rock band America. Born in Fort Worth, Texas on September 12, 1952 to an American father and an English mother. He began playing the piano at age 3 and the guitar a few years later. By 1962 he was playing guitar in The Vanguards an instrumental surf music band in Virginia. He spent every summer in England and soon discovered British invasion music.

In 1967 Beckley's father became the commander at the U.S. Air Force Base at West Ruislip, near London. Gerry attended Central High School in Hartfordshire where he played in various school bands and met his soon to be band members, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek.

Gerry has continued success with the rock band America as well as his solo releases Van Go Gan, Go Man Go (a re-mix of Van Go Gan) and the soon to be released Horizontal Fall.

Gerry has worked with a wide variety of musicians on many projects. One of the most notable is the recording Like a Brother done with Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys and Robert Lamm of Chicago. Beckley-Lamm-Wilson released Like a Brother in 2001.

Another long awaited fabulous album!
Horizontal Fall is another fabulous solo album/cd performed & sung beautifully, and written, arranged & produced by Gerry Beckley. Quite impressive, to say the least. His latest disc contains an interesting collection of material and 15 pop songs, ballads, and instrumentals along with the dynamic "Lazarus" which really rocks! Horizontal Fall continues in the tradition of Van Go Gan with unique, fun interesting, and catchy songs with great hooks, and is solid all the way through from beginning to end. Each and every song is interesting with beautiful, unique, heartfelt vocals, interesting lyrics that are well-crafted & arranged from start to finish... as the title above stated. Horizontal Fall starts off with the beautiful and airy 3am instrumental and the album finishes off with the lovely 3am Reprise. A real classic. It then picks up with some truly great pop tunes such as "Crying" and "Saturday Sky" and "I'll Be Gone." Gerry also included some beautiful ballads such as "Here & Now", "Love & Leaving and "Arms" with the latter one considered a real masterpiece and an impressive song. I have to say though, I strongly disagree with another reviewer who stated that "The Farmer Is The Man" is a weak song or a dud. It's actually the opposite and a really great tune, and a strong effort. Obnoxious? I disagree. "The Farmer" is one of the most interesting songs on the album and a really unique, heartfelt and interestingly arranged song and a real gem. "The Farmer" also has the most interesting vocals I've heard in a long while, and is also a nod to a 1920's or 1930's depression era tune which was a real surprise to learn since I thought that Gerry had penned it himself. "Warm Gone Gray" is another fun, upbeat bouncy tune with a calypso feel to it, but with some dark undertones or underlying message, a really great song! "Fireman" is another truly classic in which Gerry also added a Beatle-esque quality or sound or verses to it. Lastly, "Somewhere, Somehow" is another beautiful ballad which contains some lovely, dreamy, whispy or airy vocals from Mimi Parker of LOW. It's a really gorgeous song which showcases Gerry's unique & beautiful vocals perfectly. The combination of Gerry's & Mimi's airy vocals are very nice. Once again, along with Van Go Gan, Gerry has produced & delivered a classic, and highly listenable album with Horizontal Fall. This disc is outstanding and Gerry has proven once again, that he's a successful, gifted, talented songwriter & vocalist. This disc was also one of the few best CD's of 2006 that I picked up. Every song is outstanding and a gem. Highly recommended!! 10 STARS!!

Amazing ,True to form, flows emotionally like life should at peak moments
I have seen Gerry a few times and there are few artists as real and down to earth as Gerry!! I met Gerry in Seattle early 80's after a show there. A true independent with no compromise for depth and quality....crying untill 3am keepin the light on,i'll be gone, arms,America, beach boys and Paul & Beatles and Gerry's special spin on it gives it a fresh, but timeless feel hard to grasp, but easy to feel and listen to.What music should be but few seldom accomplish.A true classic!! A must have for any real or unreal music fan!Gerry gets better and even better each time!!

Beautiful mix of songs; you'll keep humming them all day.
There are some CDs you have to listen to several times to appreciate them. Not this one! It latches on to you from the start and keeps you humming all day long. Once you listen to the first track "3am" you'll be mezmerized. Gerry Beckley is one of the most gifted song writers of our time.

great album
Not QUITE so great as VanGoGan, but close!

Good overall effort . . .
I'm a huge Beckley fan dating back to the original America days. I don't think Horizontal Fall is quite at the level of VanGoGan, but it's still a very good album. I was a little disappointed that there was not a real standout song like on previous albums with songs such as Goodbye Highway, All My Life, etc. My favorite song is probably "Keeping the Light On". My least favorite and the only major dud on the album is "The Farmer" song . . . very obnoxious and I skip it every time. I was bummed that this album didn't contain more piano based songs that compliment Gerry's voice so beautifully. This album reminds me of a mix of Vertical Horizon and Tom Petty. So, overral a strong effort, just wish there were more piano based songs.

Simply Genius
He's a musical genius. We knew that. But it had been a while since the last tangible proof. It's here now--the tangible proof that is. Buy it. Let me know if you disagree.

Gerry has done it again!!!
Gerry has done it again. Both Solo CD's are perfection in song writing. They are to me, as good or better than anything he has been involved with, his whole career. It is everything I was hoping for. After having a small problem with this order, I would like to say CD Baby's Customer Service stepped up to the plate and delivered. Thanks Cd Baby. This CD is great!!! 10 Stars

It\'s simply Gerry!
Simply stated, I love anything that Mr. Beckley\'s voice appears on. I have to say that Van Go Gan is one of my all time favorites, but this one hasn\'t been out of my CD player since CDBaby lovingly mailed it to me.

Gerry--When is your next CD available? And when will Matt release something?!
