Notes from Underground

by Benjamin Russell

Album Notes
Reissue 2018 (recorded 1980-1982)

"We saw ourselves as punk monks, living by Elyce’s Ground Rules, underground in Lachine at the end of the Montreal city bus route. We traveled from one end of the island to the other on public transport with a small amp and mic stand in a backpack, muscling guitar and synth cases through crowds on the metro. In a small studio at 3800 Broadway, the tracks for NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND were recorded at Bar None Studios between 1980 and 1982." - Benjamin Russell

ELYCE’S GROUND RULES (The ground is where you stand) :

1 - Don’t put anyone down (Do you like being around people who point out your mistakes?)
2 - Don’t put yourself down (If you don’t show your best, you’re putting YOU down)
3 - Solve your problems (You get respect only if you can take it. Can you take it?)

Punk Pop Lo-fi Synth, NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND was produced by Benjamin Russell. All songs are written by Benjamin Russell and Elyce except, "Ghost of the Risin Sun", which is a variation on a theme over 400 years old, arranged by Benjamin Russell.

Elyce calls it a rock opera. It is a Golden Notebook Primal Scream wall of sound — guitars, synths and drum machines swung so hard the beats overlap. Intense. Not for the faint of heart.
