Album Notes
Inspiration for the album title - "Ultraviolet Catastrophes' came before the songs had actually been written. Historically, the Ultraviolet Catastrophe , which is sometimes referred to as the Rayleigh–Jeans catastrophe, was a prediction of late 19th century/early 20th century classical physics that an ideal black body at thermal equilibrium will emit radiation with infinite power. It is an example of classical physics breaking down, not actually able to predict reality.

The term "ultraviolet catastrophe" was first used in 1911 by a fellow by the name of Paul Ehrenfest, yet the concept itself goes back to 1900 with the first derivation of the Rayleigh–Jeans law; the word "ultraviolet" refers to the fact that the problem appears in the short wavelength region of the electromagnetic spectrum. (The Ultraviolet region). Since the first appearance of the term, it has also been used for other predictions of a similar nature, where the logic of classical physics fails to predict a 'real world" outcome. This whole concept seems to apply generally to my experiences writing music, or letting music flow through me (a more accurate description of the process). The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
The music works just fine on first listen, but as you deconstruct it and examine the fragments, something emerges that isn't quite so apparent on the surface of the whole. Though there is nothing 'supernatural' at all at work here, it's a bit like quantum physics in a sense...looking closely (listening closely) reveals a certain underlying reality that is 'more real' than the one we deal with day to day and observe on the surface. The lyrics are a spectrum of minimal absolutes...in that I was attempting to express certain ideas in a manner that leaves room for the listener to participate in completing the final meanings for themselves. The term 'meta pop' has been used to describe some of the previous works I've released...I think that is an apt description. Though it's not traditional pop music, it is informed by it. Though it's not actually metaphysical, it shares more than a few parameters with that modality of thinking. Possibilities. The true nature of reality is that it is less real than the underlying elements of which it is composed. It's very hard to say what this album sounds like, though we musicians are always asked to categorize their work in this way. I suppose It can be said that most all music I've heard and enjoyed influences my own music in one way or another, as music does not occur in a vacuum. Some influences I can hear in this album include 10cc, Kate Bush, Brian Eno, David Byrne, & maybe the Beatles in terms of composition. In terms of guitar work I'd have to say Alan Holdsworth, Steve Hackett, and Robert Fripp have been influential
yet I don't think the tracks sound particularly like anything any of them would do but you may spot the influence in certain choices of notes or tonalities. Most of the guitar tones on this album are from a beautiful Vox Virage made in England, then my Fender Custom Shop Telecaster, and a remarkable Ibanez Artist series hollowbody with a Bixby vibrato (for the more jazzy tones). I favor the Vox AC30 for my guitar tones though some direct to board and re-amping were employed in this outing.
