Album Notes
Ben Winship is a master at writing the "great old songs" of the future.  With the help of some of the finest traditional musicians plying the trade today, Ben gets to the heart of a lyric, and nestles in the heart of the listener.
~ Joe Newberry

“Acorns” is an expertly executed blend of style and form reflecting a stellar cast of the best contemporary old time music has to offer. Winship’s expertise with mandolin and pen are highlighted throughout. One gets the impression that here is a guy that deals with life with a smile —this is a project sure to chase away the doldrums. ~ Mike Compton

Acorns showcases an organic roots music world based around late-night jam sessions and picking parties, and includes guests like Canadian artists Pharis Romero and Chris Coole, plus Scotty Meyer, Forrest Gibson, Rayna Gellert, Brittany Haas, Eli West, and Mollie O’Brien

“I think over the last few years, as I’ve become more mired in the studio,” Winship says, “the joy of playing live music with people has taken on more shine. The opportunities I get to play with really good players in a casual jam session... I think I get more out of that than just about anything else. I wanted to make the Acorns record more of a celebration of live interactive playing.” Winship sources instrumental pieces from American stringband traditions, and writes old-timey songs in the vein of Tim O’Brien. There’s an easy feel to Acorns, a result of the lively sessions that undergird each track, each one born up by hours of impromptu jam sessions at music camps across the US where Winship teaches.

Ben Winship has a much longer musical wingspan than most artists, and easily bears the weight not only of so many stellar guests and all kinds of complex arrangements, but also his own outstanding musicianship and songwriting throughout.
