ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Some of L.A.'s best artists - Los Lobos, John Doe, Dave Alvin, Peter Case, Eleni Mandell, and Stew, among others - gather on this CD to support Internos Music Organization, providing music education to underprivileged children in Los Angeles. To reflect L.A.'s musical diversity, the CD covers a wide range of styles: singer/songwriter (John Doe, Eleni Mandell, Patrick Park), border music (Los Lobos, Dave Alvin), alt rock (James Combs, Sally Semrad), pop (Jeremy Toback, Julian Coryell), and impressionistic (Minnow). Soundbytes by Internos beneficiaries (ages 8-16) are inserted in between some of the tracks.

Kicking off the CD is a beautiful new track by John Doe, "Repeat Performance." Produced by critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter Joe Henry, this song is a lush, but haunting ballad, colored with distant cymbals, slide guitar, and upright bass. The song is currently part of Doe's live set, and is not included on his new album, Dim Stars, Bright Sky (2002, iMUSIC/ARTISTdirect).

Although made for an adult audience, much of the CD's mood is tinged with childhood themes. Dave Alvin's "What Did the Deep Sea Say" (from his Grammy-award winning Public Domain), Los Lobos' "La Iguana (son jarocho)" (from their first album, Just Another Band From East L.A.), Eleni Mandell's "To Dream of Sarah" (from Wishbone) and Tracy Spuehler's "Sunflower" reflect a childhood innocence, particularly endearing when mixed next to a child's soundbyte recording

Aside from showcasing illustrious musicians, "Between Us" hosts songs by some of the best up-and-coming talent in L.A. If you're into singer/songwriters (such as Elliot Smith, Mazzy Star, Billy Bragg, Jeff Buckley), you'll love this compilation.

All proceeds are donated to Internos Music Organization.
