Album Notes

Beverly Ritz's new CD, BY ROWDY CREEK, is piano music that takes the listener on a journey through the California Redwoods and then up the Oregon coast. “The point of my music is to help people find peace and tranquility,” Ritz explains. According to fans, this music is both comforting and healing, reminding them of another time when popular music was dominated by composers like Mancini and Jobim, and creating an ambience that is hopeful and serene. Composer/pianist Jessica Williams exclaims, "I love what I am hearing. You're playing with passion and heart, and it's just beautiful!"

Beverly will follow the path of BY ROWDY CREEK wherever it leads her.

On August 11, 2007, she found many new fans at her concert at Gold Beach Books in the beautiful Biscuit Building in Gold Beach, Oregon.

On August 31st, Ms. Ritz gave a solo piano concert at the Performing Arts Center in Newport, Oregon! This event was the last in a series called JAZZ FRIDAYS, which led up to the JAZZ AT NEWPORT festival.

Also, while in Newport, she dined at the Italian Riviera Restaurant in Depoe Bay, and owner/pianist Ric DiBlassi insisted Beverly play a song on his grand. The crowd loved "By Rowdy Creek!"

On October 7, 2007, published Denise Squier's review of BY ROWDY CREEK, and it is--to say the least--the review every recording artist dreams about. Ms Squier states that "the title song is one of the loveliest original piano compositions she has heard in a long time." And she goes on to exclaim that "any one of the songs on this CD could easily have been selected for a Narada compilation disc!"

On December 2, 2007, announced that BY ROWDY CREEK is one of the TOP 25 CDs of 2007!!

Beverly Ritz is available for solo and group performances in concert halls & performing arts centers, jazz venues, and educational facilities. If you would like to hear Ms. Ritz's music on a great piano in a venue near you, call the manager. Spread the news about Beverly Ritz & BY ROWDY CREEK!

From MainlyPiano
"By Rowdy Creek" is a soothing and relaxing collection of ten original piano solos by jazz pianist/composer Beverly Ritz. Living in northern California near the Oregon border, Ritz’s love of nature and the ocean is apparent in many of her song titles as well as her gentle rhythms and laid-back style. On a mission to preserve jazz standards and other beautiful music, Ritz’s music is readily accessible to most listeners yet complex enough to fascinate a more discerning ear. Hers is not the smooth jazz “fluff” that seems to be just about everywhere; this is music from the heart of someone who has been playing music since she was three years old and is completely at ease with the piano.

The title track opens the set. Despite the “rowdy” title, this piece is smooth and very much at peace. I get a mental image of someone lying in the sun next to the creek in that blissful state between falling asleep and being awake enough to enjoy the sun’s warmth and the tranquility of the sounds of the creek. “Under the Redwood Tree” has a similar mood, although the music is different - a soothing musical daydream. “A Distant Dream” picks up the tempo a bit although it is still very relaxed and contented. The strong melody of “Aren’t You the One?” suggests that perhaps this lovely song has lyrics, but Ritz plays it so conversationally that words really aren’t needed - we understand what she is telling us. “In A Hurricane” was composed to honor those who died in the New Orleans nursing home during Hurricane Katrina. Far from funereal, this lovely piece is much more of a heartfelt tribute than an elegy. I love “The Cat In the Forest.” Alternately adventurous, cautious, and a little bit lost, the piece is graceful and gently rhythmic - a beauty! I also love the elegant, easy grace of “Dreams Danced (In the Sky),” which gives me visions of light, airy clouds swirling in a crystal blue sky. There are some dense, intricate chords in this piece that make it a real standout. Ritz saved the best for last (in my ears, anyway!), closing with “The River and the Sea.” I’ve sat and watched quite a few rivers flow into the ocean and this piece captures the serenity of that experience - gorgeous!

If you haven’t yet discovered the music of Beverly Ritz, this is a great place to start! Highly recommended!

A Beautiful Journey
"By Rowdy Creek" takes the listener on a wonderful journey in nature that undoubtedly mirrors Ms. Ritz' homeland area of Crescent City, CA.
You can feel the stream, and see the redwoods towering overhead.
Very much in the style of George Winston and other "heart-felt" pianists, Ms. Ritz delivers a beautiful set of evocative solo piano pieces. Highly recommended if you want to lower your stress level by a few notches.
