Liner Notes/Interview by Greg Groeper:
JUKEBOX BLUES - Side A – Release July 18, 2019

When I stop and think about it, my previous 4CDs: UNIVERSAL BLUESMAN, SOME BLUES FOR YOU, HERE COMES BIG POPPA STAMPLEY, and even my Smooth Jazz CD; SMOOTH CHI TOWN GROOVES, were based around a general collection of songs and not "thematic“ as a whole.

However, this new CD, JUKEBOX BLUES – Side A (is meant to give the listener “a tour” of my reinventing BLUES styles and feelings of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. To me, this is where Blues, Jazz and the newer R&B style (which began later) all intersect. For those who remember, the Blues (and its children) was America’s Pop music for a long time, and still is the underlying fabric of most popular styles that evolved later, including Rock, Country Rock, Hip Hop, House and Rap. In JUKEBOX BLUES – Side A I attempt to recapture the feeling for Blues lovers and pop music “hipsters” that have eclectic ears . It features a few collaborations with other song writers that I haven’t done on past albums.

Track 1: THIS BEER AIN’T WORKIN’ is a fun lighthearted Blues shuffle co-written with famous actor, casting director and playwright Vin Morreale, Jr.. I composed the music & Vin wrote the lyrics.

Track 2: SITTIN’ ON TOP OF THE WORLD is my rearrangement of an ever popular Blues song by The Mississippi Sheiks. It is the fun and breezy story of a man who loses everything but is still filled with a feeling of inner joy.

Track 3: MOON OVER EAST ST. LOUIS is a heartfelt Mississippi Blues ballad by my jazz buddy Greg Groeper (ENJA Records, Munich) from my home town Chicago describing the sad and hopeful realities of life in East St. Louis, Illinois. I re-arranged his song to fit my style and added some nice little solos.

Track 4: RACEHORSE BLUES is an acoustic slide guitar Blues vamp written by a couple of my Blues heroes Sylvester Weaver and Helen Humes, both natives of Louisville, Kentucky, and originally recorded on the first Blues Guitar Duo ever.

Track 5: THE UNIVERSAL SOUL OF MAN is an upbeat song I wrote with my son, John, a well-traveled man in his own right, and chronicles his world travels. The story takes us to several continents and features various languages and cultures while he searches for life’s meaning only to find how similar we are as humans the world over.

Track 6: KEEP THIS LOVE ALIVE is a pop style male/female vocal duet (biographical, if you will) I wrote about a couple trying to understand how to love through ordinary life struggles and limited success, and in the end about how keep it alive one way or another.

I sure hope you enjoy this little trip down Blues history and styles with me. Please watch for the second half, JUKEBOX BLUES – Side B coming soon.

All my Love,
Mark “Big Poppa Stampley”
