Album Notes
Souvenirs. I called this album Souvenirs because it’s a patchwork of songs that I’ve had the privilege of recording with some of the most important people in my life… a few of whom are no longer with us. This is a tribute to all of the talented people who helped to make this album possible and a chance for me to honor the friendships that brought us together in the magic of musical collaboration.

When I recorded my first album, “Look To The Rainbow”, I had the great delight of finally bringing my amazing dad and his brother, my Uncle Bob, into a studio in our hometown of St. Louis to record together for the first time. In three days, with the help of drummer Kevin Giordano, the four of us managed to get 22 songs in the can! I figured that the tunes I didn’t use in the first CD, I eventually would down the pike. Well, we’re now down the pike, and am I ever glad we pushed ourselves to do more. My dad, Rich, is one of the finest pianists I’ve ever worked with and Bob Daugherty is a name in the biz all the old-timers respect hugely. To not only claim them as “mine” but to also get a chance to sing with them was a genuine thrill.
I had actually forgotten half of the numbers we had laid from those sessions until we transferred all the old ADAT tapes to digital. My engineer and good friend of many years, Chip Fabrizi, worked tirelessly to preserve a few of the other remaining gems, as well, which I had thought to do at the time in subsequent sessions in New York. One was with my buddy, the late Peter Howard and the other with my dear mentor and musical “Auntie Mame”, the legendary Margaret Whiting – whom we lost last year.
After Margaret and I spent time on the first duet (“A Fine Romance”) she felt she still had one more in her and we gave a valiant pass on the “Walk Medley” – which included a song she had done on Capitol some fifty years prior. Our session, I believe, was the last time Miss Whiting was in a studio. She had already had the first of several set-backs in her health but she insisted we stick with the plan and, bless her heart, she honored me with the session of a lifetime. To actually record with my favorite singer of them all! I’m sure you’ll understand why I felt I had to include it among my souvenirs. I miss her every day.
Renowned Broadway pianist, arranger and conductor Peter Howard graced me with a whole day in the studio when we mapped out what we were going to record for “Rainbow”. Then we threw in a few more which I was so thankful to unearth, recently, and present this time around… forgotten gems like “Tenement Symphony” from the Marx Brothers film The Big Store sung by Tony Martin, “Friendly Star” featured by Judy Garland in Summer Stock and the thrilling evergreen from On The Town, “Lonely Town”.
At the tail end of the session, just as we were about to pack it in and head home, Peter said, “Bill, darling, why don’t we give one pass at ‘Danny Boy’ and see if we get it? No one sings that one better than you and we should record it.” We did. He nailed it. And I’ve included it as a loving homage to my beloved Peter Howard.
Doyle Newmyer, my brilliant musical director for all my projects and a man whom I am proud to call one of my closest friends, worked diligently and selflessly to craft orchestrations around Peter’s superb piano artistry as with the other tracks on the latter half of this album.
Someone with whom I’ve worked on numerous occasions throughout my career is musical director, pianist and composer Barry Levitt. He accompanied me and Margaret on our session and it was then he offered me the song “Now That We’re Sure It’s Over” – which was a Johnny Burke lyric to which he was given the challenge of setting a melody. It’s a beautiful tune which, a generation ago, would have become a standard. I intended to include it on the first release but we ran out of room! So all these years later here sat this neat little nugget waiting patiently for release. I’m so thankful I had thought to bring in the incomparable Gerry Niewood during that session to provide the effortless sax you’ll hear. Sadly, only a short time after we recorded this tune, a plane he was in went down in upstate New York – killing all on board. It was a loss that set the music world reeling.

When I first moved to the city it was with a young lady from Birmingham by the name of, oh… I don’t know… Rebecca Luker! She and I had been singing waiters down in Pine Mountain, Georgia the previous summer. During that first rehearsal she opened her mouth to sing and I was awestruck! I pulled her aside, asked her what in God’s name she was doing at Callaway Gardens and told her unequivocally that she was going to be a star! That summer we made a pact to move to New York, when we felt it was time, to pursue our dreams.
I had just finished a contract at the Keswick Theater in Philly when it was finally “time” and her call set me packing and we quickly landed an apartment in Brooklyn and shortly thereafter she landed Phantom of the Opera… then Showboat, Secret Garden, Music Man, The Sound of Music… well, you get the picture. This is the first time in twenty years she and I have gotten a chance to go back in the studio and record together and I knew I wanted to join forces with her on this poignant duet from Maltby and Shire’s Closer Than Ever. To this day she remains the darling of Broadway and one of my most cherished friends. And I remain awestruck.
I fell into teaching quite by accident and it’s probably one of the happiest happenstances I’ve known. In 1997 I began my addendum career at CAP21, one of the nation’s finest musical theater training programs, and have had the opportunity to coach young performers – the likes of which include Matthew Morrisson, Anne Hathaway and Kristen Bell. One student, however, stands out for me among so many of the others because of our immediate bond and the lasting friendship we forged. He also has one of the finest voices I’ve ever had the honor of having a hand in training. His name is Ben Seidman and his voice thrills me. We’ve always looked for an opportunity to perform “Lily’s Eyes” from Secret Garden and, at last, here it is!
And finally… my last “souvenir”. I know that, without her, so much of what is my life today would never have come to pass. It was through my treasured friend Connie Pachl, someone I’ve known since college, that I met Max Weintraub – our producer, patron and personal angel. After setting up Thoroughbred Records for Connie and me, and producing our first CD’s, he also backed us for a show at Don’t Tell Mama called Let’s Duet. I custom built it for the two of us and our musical director, Doyle Newmyer, brought it together seamlessly. Our eleven o’clock number was a monster mash-up of some of Broadway’s most celebrated duets. There was no way I was going to miss a chance to record this for the ages – and I would never pass up a chance to sing with Connie – one of the most gifted and sensitive artists I know. And adore.
So, I hope you’ll enjoy the trip down my personal memory lane. Each one of these songs is significant to me for many reasons and in many ways. I hope it somehow proves true for you, the listener, as well and that one or two of them become your own souvenirs.

The Beauty Of Bill Daugherty
“Souvenirs “, the new CD by Bill Daugherty is another
glowing example of this artist’s impeccable gifts as a premier
interpreter of the classic American songbook.
The repertoire is fresh and varied with songs by such
composers as Burke/VanHeusen, Legrand, Mancini and Bernstein
to name a few.
And the instrumental musicians are excellent, including Bill’s
father, Richard (piano) and uncle, Bob (bass) and other notable
players such as Warren Vache and Gerry Niewood.
The recording, engineered by the renowned Chip Fabrizi at
PPI Recording in New York City, is first rate, and a welcome
enhancement to Bill’s incomparable artistry.
I highly recommend this release and know you will enjoy the
unique and wonderful array of Bill Daugherty’s exceptional talents.
