Album Notes
Bill Overton (Tenor Sax, Flute, Alto Flute, Clarinet, Acoustic and Electric Baritone Guitars and Vocals) was born in Memphis in 1954 and grew up there immersed in its blues, jazz and soul music. After receiving his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana, he moved to New York City in 1981 where he performed with Mel Lewis, Doc Cheatham, Mickey Roker, Major Holley, Vic Dickinson, Rosemary Clooney, Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, Howard Alden, Bo Diddley, the Temptations, the Spinners, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and many others while teaching at the Brooklyn Conservatory, William Patterson College, and the Aebersold Summer Jazz Clinics, as well as in the public schools. He has recorded extensively and conducted clinics and master classes throughout the U.S. and abroad. Bill and his family moved to Libertyville, Illinois, in 1998, where he taught beginning band, guitar and music technology at Oak Grove School until his retirement in 2014. He continues to perform with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Ravinia Festival Orchestra (Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, Seth McFarlane, Michael Feinstein, Bernadette Peters, etc.), the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Cubs Band, on-stage guitarist and woodwind doubler with the show, “Louis and Keely Live at the Sahara”, The Metropolitan Jazz Octet, the Slide Hampton Octet, the Main Stem Orchestra, Petra's Recession Seven, the Ike Reilly Assassination, his own quartet, and many others, and continues to record extensively. His debut recording as a leader, “The Sun Will Shine”, was released in 2015, his second release, “Always In My Heart”, came in 2016 and his latest album, "Only Love Can Do That", has just been released.
