ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
BILLY BUCKETT - A ROCK ’N’ ROLL LOVE STORY is a musical with drama, pathos, and a delightfully daffy British sense of humour, set in small-town England 1959 against the colourful backdrop of the era of Teddy-Boys & Judies, at the dawn of rock ‘n’ roll.

This album features the on-stage performances of the 16-strong cast and 6-piece band of Footlights Theatrical’s 2018 production of BILLY BUCKETT - A ROCK 'N' ROLL LOVE STORY before a live audience at the Logan Entertainment Centre.

Following the story of a young mechanic 'from the wrong side of the tracks' who dreams of pop stardom and falls in love with a rich-man's daughter, the musical explores the social mores of the time - the British class system, gender inequity, teenage pregnancy and the generation gap.

Jay Turner's original music rides a 1950’s-inspired pop-pendulum from toe-tapping, hand-clapping, get-to-your-feet-and-dance numbers like ‘Dynamo’, ‘Daddy’ & ‘Who Were You With’, to the stunningly romantic ‘Tender Is The Night’, the soulful ‘Feather On The Wind’, and the reflective epiphany of ‘Photographs and Memories’.

BIRTH OF A MUSICAL
For British singer-songwriter Jay Turner, Billy Buckett has been decades in the making. ”I wrote the story back in 1987, based on people I knew growing up in working class England during the 1950 and 60s,” Jay says.
”I thought it was a book, but then realised it was more likely a stage or screenplay. Since I was a musician, and since it was set in 1959, turning it into a rock ‘n’ roll musical seemed the logical step.”
The resulting set of songs paid homage to Turner’s musical and cultural roots, growing up at a time when Britain was finding the unique musical voice that would soon explode across the world.
