Album Notes
Billy Payne is Outlaw Country at it's best... Listen to the influences here country meets the blues. This is the third CD Payne has recorded with the former members of the Waylon Jennings band. Produced by Jerry "Jigger" Bridges and engineered by the one and only Billy Sherrill.

Billy Payne

Smooth country with true Waylon-esque grit.

GENUINE LEATHER is the new full length album release from old-style country artist, Billy Payne; a harmonious toe-tapping collection of tracks that pay homage to some of the genre’s finest yesteryear sounds, with added musical oomph from the Waymore’s Outlaws.
Effective opener, Cheap Thrills and rock fused The Real Thing provide the album with foot-tapping beats; the former combining Kevin Mandill’s bluesy organ chords with soulful drawls, the latter consisting of smooth country rock at its near finest. Too Many Honky Tonks on My Way Home likewise gives a respectful nod to its country roots; Payne’s gritty vocals coupled with honky-tonking flurries of piano rewarding the track endlessly.
People Like Us, The Whisky Took the Rest and We Had It All offer up vocals treasures; the two formers sharing major similarities with the iconic drawls of Waylon Jennings whilst the latter sees Payne’s usual gravelly vocals take on a more softer edge as he sings of lost love.
A handful of the tracks on the album use interesting themes; When I Promised You The World tells a poignant tale of love’s power when all is lost; Carter Robertson’s beautiful vocals complementing Payne’s perfectly, whilst the laidback country feel of Gypsy suggests a nomadic lifestyle. Title track, Genuine Leather typifies Payne’s character perfectly; its typical country rhythm carrying rocky guitar loops, twinkling acoustics and revealing lyrics of how real leather can be scuffed and worn, yet still as strong as it was brand new.
Gems of the record include a poppy rendition of the Waylon Jennings classic Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way, effective yet lacking its former magic; Sometimes She Forgets which sees Payne share a deep tonal resemblance with Blake Shelton and Honky Tonk Heroes; a quirky intro resembling 1800s saloon bar chordal flurries before beefing up into much rockier territory adds to the album’s originality.
GENUINE LEATHER is an album rough on the edges, yet incredibly easy to enjoy. Fingers crossed, we’ll see Billy Payne touring the UK in the near future. Emily Saxton MAVERICK MAGAZINE U.K.
