Masses of compressed tones, forged in lines of synths with hybrid forms and tones, which unfold at a brisk pace on a mixture of percussions and unbridled pulsations, here is to what our ears are entitled by testing the limits of Biomass and its last EP; Energy. Project of the Californian synth man James Walter Douglas, Biomass goes places on the Californian coast since the end of the 90's with visual shows starring his music which is a mixture of Industrial and Dark ambient fed by hard-hitting drones, linear stroboscopic movements from which are escaping unbridled and bouncy rhythms. Energy presents this music; the rest goes between your ears!
"Soar Acido" starts the ball with a synth line which appears out from silence to buzz of a deep bouncy movement. Like a long line of sequence molded in a synth blade and a collage of successive percussions, "Soar Acido" parades on a tremulous and convulsive linear movement wrapped by a warm synth aura. From soft to very livened up the movement dies out in a slender ambient and resonant filet. "Snake Sphinx" is superb with its tom-toms filled by steroids which thunder under a juxtaposition of synth layers which slide on a heavy and bumpy rhythm. Minimalist and powerful it prepares us for "Serpentetraspeed" which collapses under a swarm of percussions and pulsations as well as a resonant bass line bursting out under floating stratas. It's a heavy, robust and frenzied rhythm which follows a lineal tangent, such as a hypnotic trance, that fine cosmic strata encircle of a celestial morphic approach. After an indecisive intro where pulsations and percussions stumble in a smothered, the rhythm of "Phaseloc" knocks out us with its hatched and bouncy stratas which explode in a powerful metallic staccato. The ambience is soaked of a curious aceric approach where tonalities seem as much virgin as caustic, calling back the rhythms of tribal trances which would take place in the gaps of an underground steel-making world. The limits of the tolerance are exposed with this minimalist approach which buzzes intensively on a movement which offers very few nuances. "Aquapolar" is an interesting title which brings us back at the time of Klaus Schulze's Totem. No both because of the rhythm as this mass of compressed synth layers which scrolls on hardly perceptible pulsations but on rhythm drawn by hummings fed in the iodized acid. It's the only track where the synths guide a rhythmic approach by undulatory circles of influence, reminding the caustic and metallic period of the German synthesist. "Minechamber" is the most beautiful title of Energy. The intro is fed by synth breaths which hum like loud machinery. The percussions fall at around the 4th minute, drawing a rhythm which is situated within the limits of Steve Roach and his tribal approaches. It's a linear rhythm which struggles under these metallic winds which float in a dreadful heat, walking "Minechamber" in an oblong minimalist corridor until the last backfiring of the percussions which fade in its drones of blown steel.
Energy of Biomass is for a public fond of hammered rhythms pulsing of a minimalist approach under tetanized and iodized synth layers. There is a not much of emotion, nor of nuances, on this EP filled with bouncy and compulsive rhythms. It's dynamite which can frighten certain ears quite as it could charm those eager for furious rhythms which spasm in bodies without souls.

Sometimes repetition can be a pain to encounter, like a never-ending stagnation of boring and uninspiring similarities born from the inability to change and mutate. However there are certain times when I find a higher purpose embedded in the repetition of sound. Like a voice from a higher plane given meaning in the endless droning of a bleeding machine..
Biomass is mechanical mayhem of unrelenting digital sound combined together to form a relentless barrage of mesmerizing sounds from the depths of a dreaming machine. It is hard to put down in words all the peculiar things I first felt when the first layers of sound struck me with its repetitive yet highly addictive chorus of electronics. Some things need not, and cannot be explained by words alone, they have to be experienced first hand. Energy is one of those rare albums where the feeling can range from complete and utter bliss to an inability to cope with what the hell is going on behind the rumbling voices in the machine.
Listening to Biomass brought me to a strange sensation of symbiosis with the various sounds and symmetries that bombarded my ears. The music is hypnotically elegant in a powerful and graceful way. Some parts of it are akin to a serene brooding industrial landscape that slowly burst out into a fully-fledged rhythmical mayhem of war machines marching off into oblivion. The music is based around various repeating structures that can go on for quite some time yet I never had the feeling it was over the top. The delicate balance between the heavy layers of atmosphere and almost ritual overdrives of mechanical bass lines is totally dominating any sign of repetition gone wrong. The borderline between machines and music is a highly beautiful thing and trying to describe the dark symmetry that is Energy is about as easy as describing a new spectrum of colours. You need something to relate to and in this case the only thing I can even closely recall is that perfect radiance that sometimes emerges with clockwork precision in the depths of a laboratory.
Energy is brilliant in so many ways and deserves more attention. Serpent Sphinx is a slow and conjuring beat with a clear and defined structure that really summons forth intriguing pictures of the ancient gone cybernetic while Phaseloc is a monstrosity of excellence in its pounding mechanical heart and it leads away into a long and painfully intriguing rhythm. This is modern music for magic makers, like the ancient shamans turned to machinery heavily beating on drums in their quest for the machine god’s domains. Anyone even mildly interested in rhythmical electronics and heavy industrial atmospheres should give this album a try. It’s well worth the time spent dreaming off into a burning horizon, and after all, it is not that often that someone actually succeeds in making the machines talk.

Biomass 'Energy' Biometrax

A wash of futuristic audio blurring rips through spatial fabrics on Biomass‘ 6-track Energy EP. A debut outing for Biometrax, Walter Douglas (aka Walter ovtha woodz, formerly of KUCR‘s 88.3 FM) began Biomass audio-visualization experiments in Los Angeles, California in 1990 and has since captivated audiences with a synthetic void of elongated auditory stimulus. This is his latest offering, a multi-dimensional plateau of musical flux.
Organically connected to visual periphery, Energy‘s six all-encompassing tracks (ranging from two to twenty-two minutes each) become one with the environment as layers of ambient flurries fall upon rusted sound machines gone awry. A particular ripple of electrical noise fuses stretched rhythmic propulsion and lively experiments against buried melodies dripping in the background. It’s difficult not to get lost in Biomass’ mechanically enriched sheets as they lock into hypnotic overload. Subliminally scratching the surface of your brain, Energy breaks down on repeat rotations. An energy that unveils psychedelic tones, intense electronic splashing and a subtle strain of tribal-warfare has Biomass lining up darkened ambience behind a fog of extraterrestrial coatings. Perhaps best suited for one swift listening experience (headphones are definitely encouraged), Energy is a source of subdued power slowly evaporating within the confines of closed, misty spaces. Energy is out now on Biometrax.
