ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Black Sea Hotel’s debut album features 16 tracks of searing, ethereal and primal a capella Balkan music as rendered by 4 American female vocalists. Rooted in the tradition of Bulgarian women’s choirs, the quartet invokes the shimmering, angelic harmonies made famous by Les Mysteres Des Voix Bulgares, even as they create their own inimitable sound that recalls the gutsiness of Zap Mama, with driving, rhythmic vocals and harmonies saturated in a sonic playground. Most of Black Sea Hotel’s arrangements are written by members of the ensemble, based on traditional melodies, but they also perform the work of Balkan composers and arrangers. Each of the singers has sung and studied this music in Eastern Europe and at home in New York City. As performers, they have collaborated with legendary Bulgarian singers and spirited contemporary NYC ensembles. Black Sea Hotel’s past performances include sets at Joe’s Pub, Drom, Pete’s Candy Store, Mehanata, and the Bulgarian Embassy.

Great music, well done, nicely recorded
Black Sea Hotel is not merely a Balkan "folk album." It is exciting and haunting music that stands firmly on its own two feet.

Full disclosure: I'm friends with one of the group's members -- I would have bought this CD no matter what. That said, no amount of friendship would cause me to listen to a CD again and again. Black Sea Hotel has earned, by its own dint, a special place in my listening world. I highly recommend it.

This 4-piece Bulgarian women’s choir from Brooklyn has not let geography or distance separate them from the heart of Balkan folk music. Their original a cappella arrangements of traditional melodies breathe new life into age-old tunes. The stark vocal blend is emotionally raw, the rhythms economical, the overall aesthetic intuitively focused. Black Sea Hotel’s singing can turn on a dime from soaring, ethereal drones to tight, percussive tones. And from the sound of things, I imagine their live performances in the NYC-area to be both captivating and raucous affairs.

I heard Black Sea Hotel perform at a house concert and was blown away. The album is just as intensely stunning. Complex melodies; tight, dissonant harmonies; energy and emotion throughout.

Black Sea Hotel
Since I'm bored with most of the music that comes out- I'm pleasantly surprised with Black Sea Hotel. Even if you just look at the logistics of creating an unaccompanied, perfectly-pitched CD, it's amazing. Add to that the close attention to dynamics (mostly missing in CDs today),and you have a good listen. You can tell the artists have bought into their style. Sit down and let them take you away to another place and time.

I first heard Black Sea Hotel at the annual wassail at Breezy Hill Orchard last year, where they sung underneath the biggest, oldest apple tree, which was all lit up with candles. Their haunting voices were the perfect accompaniment. So of course I had to get their album, and it's everything that performance was! Also, another great show last Saturday night at the Balkan Shout Out. They are one of the best examples of vocal polyphony out there, and one of Balkan music's rising stars.

FABULOUS!
I heard this group at last years' EEFC Balkan camp and was blown away--they even serenaded me to sleep on the last night! What GLORIOUS voices, what WONDERFUL arrangements---and they are here in the States!!! We must CHERISH them!
