ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
'New York Girls' is a combination of sea shanties, forebitters, and drinking songs. The sea shanty, a type of folk music which flourished in the nineteenth century, is a musical hybrid. On merchant ships, West African work songs blended with British and Irish melodies and verses, forming a rich tradition which gradually died out, as steam power and electricity reduced the need for coordinated group muscle. Forebitters, by contrast, are longer songs which sailors sang for each other as entertainment.

Musicians:

Jeff Pekarek; bouzouki and vocals
Beatriz Basile; contrabass and vocals
Richard Tibbitts; flute, whistle, and vocals
Mike Stewart: guitar and vocals
