Album Notes
In a singer-songwriter world where contemporary trends demand slick guitar sounds and drum loop undercurrents, Jody Blackwell's newest CD Living Room Dances takes her eclectic fusion of jazz and acoustic music in an old school direction with powerful results.

Her pristine unreverbed vocals float through this recording on the wave of ethereal open guitar tunings, Latin-influenced rhythms, and subtle jazz inflections from a talented band who bring to this collaboration the groove of their rock and funk backgrounds.

Blackwell skillfully navigates the line between folk and jazz, with unpretentious, keenly observant lyrics delivered in a vocal style reminiscent of the young Joni Mitchell, but chords and harmonies that move in interesting, unexpected angles, more suggestive of an acoustic Pat Metheny.

From the percolating sixteenth note groove of Bachelor Party, to the haunting imagery and hypnotically rhythmic drop C strumming of Rare Bird, Blackwell's acoustic sound provides more grit and power than subsonic bass or massive keyboard washes ever could.

You Should Have This Dance
The Boston folk music scene is so crowded that sometimes you have to get through the smoke in order to reach the inferno. Jody Blackwell's latest release, Living Room Dances, is no exception. Check out this gem and enjoy gorgeous vocals, intelligent lyrics, and a haunting vibe. Jody's well-crafted lyrics are both self-revealing and mysterious.

"Spinning" kicks off Dances and will inspire you from the start with an amazing melody. "Crusade" carries a powerful straight-ahead folk-rock feel. "Straighter Ways" is lyrically brilliant and musically gripping, revealing Jody's personal side. "Bachelor Party" is upbeat and airy, while "When Love Comes" is pure beauty and will melt your heart.

What sets Jody aside from other talented songwriters is her raw musical talent and pure creativity. While there is nothing simple about Jody's songs and choice of chord composition, Living Room Dances is a comfortable listen and a cohesive story told from start to finish (the way records used to be).

LRD is a brilliant piece of work that brings Jody to the forefront of the local music scene in Boston. In true form, Boston's music elite have somehow chosen to overlook Jody's genius for a slew of milquetoast Boston Music Award nominees this year. Nevermind that. Living Room Dances is the best folk album to come out since Peter Mulvey's '95 indie label debut, Rapture.

You should have this Living Room Dance.
