ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Introduction:

"Christmas Presence" is the Blue Seven Trio's fifth recording effort to date and their first recorded attempt to translate Christmas music into jazz. The arrangements in this compilation were taken from their original form, re-harmonized and transcribed by Joseph Cappello, then modified further as a collective effort by the trio as a group. It is our hope that our interpretation of this music will give you that special feeling, in both the "Presence of Christmas" as well as the "Presence of Jazz."

The Band:

The Blue Seven Trio consists of Joseph Cappello on piano, Kevin Gardner on bass and Peter Gaudioso on drums. The Philadelphia based trio is available for a variety of venues including: private parties, weddings, banquets, restaurants, or jazz clubs. For more information, please visit our web site at www.blue7jazz.com.

The Musicians:

Joseph Cappello is Blue Seven's resident pianist, the trio being his longest ever musical commitment second only to his one time experience as a hotel pianist back in 1991 where he was known at that time for his purely rubato style. His ideas over the years have found inspiration in several music genre specifically within the Jazz, Rock, and Fusion realms reaching as far away from mainstream as New Age and Avant-garde. Joseph lives in Darby, Pennsylvania, has a career in the computer field, and pursues music as a composer, arranger, and performer, as his time in life allows.

Kevin Gardner serves as bassist, recording engineer, desktop publisher, web designer, and CD producer for the band. He shares this project as his first recorded effort playing the acoustic upright bass. Gardner indicates that the acoustic upright bass has the tone and action which is needed to fully complement the traditional jazz styles and expressions as opposed to the electric upright which he used in the band's previous recordings. Kevin lives in Richboro, Pennsylvania, and works two jobs in the medical field in addition to his musical endeavors as a composer, arranger, and performer .

Peter Gaudioso, who has the reputation of being "more than just a drummer," can be found playing in a variety of different places, styles, and genres throughout the Philadelphia area on a regular basis. His experience as a full time musician allows him to project his own ideas in expression with the other members of the trio. Gaudioso's commitment to incorporating "energy" into the playing gives the trio that often needed assertion. Peter resides in Philadelphia, PA, where he works primarily as a performing and studio session musician.

The Music:

The "Christmas Presence" opener, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" which is usually heard as a ballad, greets the listener at a moderate swing tempo. It's rubato ending makes way for the powerful "We Three Kings," the highlight of the CD, which moves back and forth between 3/4 and 4/4 time and is centrally embraced by Gaudioso's energy laced drum solo and "Carol Of The Bells" in the 3/4 section of the piano solo.

You can catch your breath on the third track as you are taken with the album's only slow dance, "The Christmas Song" played as a ballad featuring added phrases in the head which are complimented each time by a superb demonstration of a live drum fade technique by Gaudioso. Gardner's bass solo takes the spot light in this piece while the piano solos only on the bridge. Then, it's back to reality on the next track with "Jingle Bells" which features an enhanced modal arrangement in 7/4 and 4/4 time.

"The Christmas Waltz," which is played in 4/4 rather than waltz time, is truly a "decked out" version of the song with it's kicks in unison, non-traditional solo sections, and "Oh Christmas Tree" embellished in the solo sections. On track 6 the tone goes fusion as a 70's electric piano sound is introduced for the first time in a recording by the band as well as an electric bass, with the center of the piece garnishing a unique bass solo by Gardner atop Cappello's enhanced modal chord changes.

"White Christmas," normally heard as a ballad, begins as such but moves to moderate swing as Cappello's piano solo quotes six other Christmas tunes. No matter when you listen, the mood is Christmas Eve with the trio's version of "Silent Night." Sensitive but animated, it paves the way for the two part finale of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." The first part allows the listener to appreciate the piece played in the traditional style, while the second time around embraces the jazz feel. The second part which is the final track brings closure to the album with a fade in to a hard driving funk jam which fades out seemingly into the timeless distance of Christmas eternal on a non traditional but purely joyous series of notes.

Christmas Presence is a must for everyone's holiday listening pleasure!
When I first listened to Christmas Presence, I was delighted at the wonderfully fresh approach the Blue Seven Jazz Trio has taken with the seasonal carols presented on this CD. Blue Seven’s arrangements give new meaning to the carols. One of my favorites is We Three Kings, to which the musicians have given a creatively jazzy and bouncy touch, without taking away from its majestic meaning. Anyone who is looking for a new sound in the old favorite Christmas songs should buy and listen to this CD. I know that you will play it over and over again and never tire of it. This is perfect music for trimming the tree and wrapping gifts by, and a welcome background to Christmas dinner. Your guests will be glad to find a copy of Christmas Presence in their stockings! Personally, I also listen to it while doing my workout routine because the music exudes so much energy. I love Christmas Presence!

I can't speak highly enough of Christmas Presence, the Blue 7 Jazz Trio's mellow renderings of so many Christmas favorites. Last year I bought 10 of them and gave them to people as gifts. Everyone I gave one to told me it was the best gift they received that year! I myself play it throughout the Christmas season and beyond: during dinner parties, while wrapping gifts, or just while trying to relax in the evening and shed winter blues and Christmas stress. This is a beautiful, original album--a refreshing alternative to the muzak that permeates the season. It will put you and keep you in the best of creatively charged holiday moods.
