Album Notes
Like "Absolutely Live Vol. I", the main part of this CD is from one concert. With "Absolutely Live Vol. I" the location was Norway. This time the recordings took place in Lille and Montpellier, France - originally released as "C'est La Vie".

Everything recorded on this CD is 100% live, and a lot of the songs were actually written on the road - as I spent most of that year on the road. The songs represent both sides of being on a long tour - the fast songs represent the hectic speedy moods you get into as you try to keep schedules that are often not human, and the slow songs represent the melancholic moods that break through sometimes as you miss the people and things that you love.

Again, like on "Absolutely Live Vol. I", some bonus tracks have been added - studio outtakes, live radio performances and concert performances - all previously unreleased material and all digitally re-mastered. There was a little more space left over after the main concert this time, leaving room for seven bonus tracks!

I hope that between these two releases I have managed to capture the essence of my "Albatross years". From my first single "Alberta" on this collection to the last note of "Tempted" on Absolutely Live Vol. I" it's been an incredible journey. There is blood, sweat & tears all over these songs - and I wouldn't have it any other way!!

To find out how this incredible journey continues, check out "The Peace Within" CD for the new "Celtic-Blues" sound of Barry Mc Cabe & Davy Spillane.

Review of the original release "C'est La Vie"
Magazine: "Jazz Freak" - Holland. Reviewer: RvK

"You can hear some gutsy rock 'n' roll in songs like "Fine, Fine, Fine", but the strongest songs are ballads such as the Mc Cabe composition "Prisoners Of Conscience" - with a beautifully sung chorus. He has a 'jewel' of a voice!

The rhythm section deserves credit too, because ego tripping often has an all-destroying effect in a blues-rock trio, but that is absolutely not the case here. The band sounds like one complete unit, without any obtrusive or disturbing 'noises' in the background."

"Absolutely Live Vol. 2 (The Albatross Years)"
Reviewed by Bobtje - (Belgium)

There is excellent news for Barry Mc Cabe's fans. After the previously released "Absolutely Live Vol. 1 (The Albatross Years)", comes Vol. 2. Just like the last time, the first part of the CD consists of a selection of songs performed during a live concert, this time recorded during a tour in France (Lille and Montpellier).

It goes without saying that these performances were fireworks. Rockin' blues in the style of Rory Gallagher, George Thorogood and Peter Green, which is actually the sound that the former Albatross were famous for. Examples are - a cool rock-'n-roll song such as: (one of Barry's favourites) 'Fine Fine Fine', a sparkling blues-rock sound in 'Feel So Good' and a steaming version of George Thorogood's 'Move It On Over'. What is great about this last song is the acoustic piano solo, which was added especially for this concert and is a pleasant surprise.

Bonus tracks that were previously unreleased can also be found on this CD (7 this time), which in my opinion really adds something to the quality of this CD. In 'Everybody's Got The Blues' you can clearly hear how much Barry has been influenced by the late Rory Gallagher. Vocally as well as on guitar he achieves striking similarities with this blues artist that passed away much too soon. For the rest there is also the lovely acoustic version of S. Eaglin 'Alberta' (originally released on the b-side of the single 'Too Late Now'), Peter Green's beautiful slow blues number 'Love That Burns' and Barry's sensitive ballad about a lost love called 'Sheilagh'.

In short - again an extremely enjoyable album with lots of variety.

McCabe does a great job in mixing blues with rock and irish music! There is hope for some great tunes in the 21st Century instead of being just spoon fed "American Idle"!

"Absolutely Live" and... blues is still alive, sure...
What a great pleasure listening to this CD !
Fabulous personal blues tunes of the BMC (hey ! I love so much the great "Too Late Now", or "Fine, Fine, Fine" : WONDERFUL :-)) sounding just like the greatest songs from the greatest bluesmen, for example Rory Gallagher (RIP). And "I Don't Know Your Name" is a pretty damned famous tune !!!
What would I say about "Talk Too Much" and its slide guitar part, or "Love That Burns" ? Nothing, just listen and enjoy...
And also some great interpretations of some very famous old rock pieces, just like "Rock 'n' Roll Medley", and of course one of my favorite blues "Alberta". GREAT !
Hurry on all of you... and buy this CD.
Anyone who loves blues and rock MUST HAVE this CD, it's a masterpiece !

....And the same goes for this.
Vol 2 continues the excellent musical standard of Vol. 1, this time mainly from an undated french tour. Particular faves? Hank Williams's 'Move it on over', a Rock 'n' roll medley from Denmark and another version of 'Alberta'. But it's all great, so no excuses, just buy it!

John Robinson

Amazing Slide Work!
What a great CD! Barry Mc Cabe's guitar playing and vocals are strong as ever. Check out the sheer soul in his rendition of Peter Green's Love That Burns; the humor in Talkin' Woman Blues; the tip of the hat to the late Rory Gallagher in Everybody's Got the Blues. There is a nice variety of styles, all within the rock 'n roll and blues traditions. Fantastic!

The BMC Band
“Absolutely Live Vol. 2”

review by ‘Bootsy’ Sheldon – Manitoba, Canada

TOO LATE NOW...The intro is a very excellent "Rory" influenced slide lead (“Who’s That Coming” comes to mind). Great song!

FINE, FINE, FINE...This tune is a fast balls to the bone rocker, the type that our drummer might say..."let’s do a slow one next, guys".

FEEL SO GOOD...Another rocker - hang on to your seat – Barry’s gonna take you for a ride!

I DON'T KNOW YOUR NAME...This one is a slow one, with great feel, and fantastic, soulful singing by Barry. (This is me getting jealous...I want to sing...I just can't). I love the touch on the guitar during the solos.

MOVE IT ON OVER...The piano solo is a great addition to this tune. Hey...Barry can play rhythm too - and very well I might add. On the surface it would seem that playing a great rhythm guitar is easy. Trust me, it’s not. Rory could play fantastic rhythm guitar, and Barry can also definitely play it as well.

PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE...This is my favourite song on the CD. This song was very heart stopping for me. I usually don't pay much attention to lyrics, for whatever reason, but these ones really caught me, and touched me in a personal way that doesn't happen often. The music works so well with the melody of the lyrics...and that singing again!!

SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL...GRAND FUNK RULES!!!! I know, I read the liner notes and Barry and the band did not even know of Grand Funk Railroad, let alone their version of this song. Hey, maybe it was Grand Funk who heard Barry’s version and ripped it off...and this song has a Bass solo as well. (It’s short...don't panic).

EVERYBODYS GOT THE BLUES...Another great tune. I love the bass riff throughout this song. I think I will BORROW it for one of my band’s tunes. In the middle of the song there is this bit with just the bass and drums holding down this great rhythm with Barry going nuts with guitar and voice. I love it!! Another Bass solo (lengthier this time)

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MEDLEY...I’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll - but I like it! (sorry...couldn't resist).

TALKIN’ WOMAN BLUES...For me the number 3 highlight of the album. Lovely slide playing ... a Great Blues. I have always been a sucker for acoustic/voice blues. I love the ending.

LOVE THAT BURNS...the number 2 best song on the album. Peter Green is SO not known in North America. It’s pathetic. He is one of the ‘greats’, but for whatever reason only a handful of people here seem to know who he is and what he has done. Peter Green is an amazing player and songwriter. Barry and the band do this song justice...fantastic performance.

ALBERTA...More acoustic Blues...heaven has come down to earth led by the archangel Barry McCabe!! It’s interesting to compare this with the version on the other CD. Which is better? It’s like asking a starving man to choose between a steak dinner or a fresh Rock Lobster meal (my personal favourite by the way). They BOTH are great in their own way. It’s amazing how quick a 4:47 song flies by when you are having fun...and again...that singing!!

HIGH SCHOOL QUEENIE...Chuck Berry meets Dick Dale who meets Barry McCabe. Say no more.

SHEILAGH.... Hey...I once went out with a girl named Sheila...a fitting mellow ending to this CD. The tune has tasteful slide playing reminiscent of George Harrison.

So this Barry McCabe guy plays a fantastic guitar, sings like he has experienced personally every emotional event in my life, and writes songs that I will remember forever. Quite a package, he is!!!!

My cardinal rule is never judge a CD after just one playing. But you know this one is just SO GOOD that even after just one listen I know it will even be better after more listens. The quality of the music is simply amazing. I also have “Absolutely Live Vol.1” and “The Peace Within” and they all get regular play on my CD players at home, at work, and in my vehicles. “Absolutely Live Vol. 2” is a welcome addition to this group of CD's and a must have for all of you out there. I would be personally proud and satisfied to have recorded any ONE of these songs myself. Barry McCabe has 3 full CD's of these amazing songs; with hopefully more CD's on the way in the future.
