Album Notes
This album was written all over the world, on many "distant shores". There are stories for each song, and some of that can be found in the song lyrics, some are written below, and more can be told at another time, in another way. Each song is meaningful to me in different ways.
1. Hymn for the Morning was written one morning while waiting in the dark for the sunrise, off the coast of the Russell Islands, in the Solomon Islands, listening to the darkness of the ocean and stars and wind. At several places we have been, (Australia, Africa, Bonaire, Solomon Islands and Canada and Colorado), I have been struck by the joyful celebration the different animals make when the sun begins to come up. I have imagined doing a church service where this was the call to worship. There is a video of this that Sheron put together which I love and can be found on YouTube or my music website.
2. This Is The Day was written off the shores of Flores in Indonesia. Seeking to hear His "Still Small Voice".
3. Listen was written in Bali, Indonesia, where the streets are filled each morning with tribute to lesser gods, calling me to put away the other business of the day and again, listen to His still small voice in my heart. I thought this would be good for the beginning of a church service.
4. Heart of My Heart was written in Bonaire, N.A. for a wedding of my nephew John Mark, and his bride, Tiffany. It uses phrases common in Sheron and I's adventures, and is also for her.
5. Cup of Understanding was written during our second trip to Africa, and involved our friend Gareth Flemix, who is the best guide in Africa. He had a tuff year, and this was written with him in mind. Written in Zarafa Camp, Botswanna - a favorite!
6. Botswanna Sunset was written at Labala and Chief's Camp in Botswanna, Africa. Sundowners - you have to experience them after a long day of safari!
7. Family Reunion was written when my aunt Judy and uncle Don were coming to visit - and about the closeness we feel even though we are living many states apart. Written off the shores of Canadian lakes while fishing with my dad and brother, and remembering my grandfather, who joined us often when I was growing up.
8. Heart Filled With Thanksgiving
9. God's Best For You was written when I got a card from my sister :Beth and her husband, Bo, with that sentiment for Christmas.
10. Christmas Grace was written during a diving trip in the Solomon Islands near Mary's Island on the Bilikiki, with my good friend Dave Mattson in mind.
11. South African Love Song was written at Royal Malewane in SOuth Africa - where I was mourning not having a guitar with me, and a guide allowed me to borrow his guitar for a few days - and I began writing about what we saw and also trying to write a love song for Sheron. There is a video of this song which Sheron put together with her pictures from this trip. You can find it on YouTube, or my music website.
12. Tiguido Mon Minou was written while on a diving trip to the east of Bali, Indonesia, near Komodo Island, and is about that diving trip and the things we saw there. Written near Komodo Island, Indonesia.
13. Sipping Soup was written by my good friend Mike Rivers, during his college days at Valparaiso University, where we began our musical friendship.
14. La La was written as a lulluby for my daughter, and it helped put her to sleep for many years.......and still may.....
