Album Notes
The CD: "Translating The Gongs"
This is a dialogue of the southeast Asian heritage of the Philippines and it’s Western (colonial) heritage, Spanish and American jazz. Perhaps, it is the affinity of their scales and harmonic implications as well as the contrast of their idioms and textures that I found mysteriously sympathetic.
And while people continually redefine their cultures to express their individuality and collectiveness, with my own hope to realize my individuality, I also found the need for a new translations for these traditional cultures. And by doing so, it allowed me to contribute a unique style of jazz that can be distinctly identified to this part of the world.

The artist:
Roberto ‘Bob’ Aves, is by profession a composer, arranger and performing artist. Born and raised in Bacolod, Negros Occidental, in central Philippines, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Composition (1979) from Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Throughout his professional career in the Philippines, Bob has always been recognized by the excellence of his works in the fields of composition, arranging and performance and has produced a number of award-winning albums in a wide range of musical genres.

In the 1990s, Bob embarked on a quest of rediscovery of Philippine indigenous music, fusing traditional instruments, rhythms and chants, forms and improvisational techniques with contemporary music genres. This unique blend of musical style ultimately became the hallmark of Bob’s work, ranging from musical scores for documentaries and independent films shown in international film festivals, theater, music for contemporary dance, and special collaborative projects with traditional and international artists for small ensembles to full orchestra.

Together with Grace Nono, Bob Aves co-founded Tao Music, an all-Filipino record label that specializes in the production and publication of traditional and contemporary culture-based titles of Philippine music and have presented this brand of Filipino world music to numerous international music festivals.

Today, Bob continues to push the boundaries of his unique musical style in the development of Philippine Jazz, a ground-breaking integration of the gong culture of the southern Philippines and contemporary jazz.
