ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
20 years as a member of Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, performing, engineering on over 250 records, Bobby Read went back to the well to create this 11 song collection of vocal songs. Produced in the mold of great records from Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Elton John, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan and others, it's a soundstage filled with vocals, keys, bass, drums, guitars, winds, strings... a big sound with lots of detail and nuance that will take you on a musical journey.

My Favorite album in years
I often measure the value of an album of music by how long it inhabits my CD player, or how often I choose it again as my walking music on my “pod”. That, and how many of the songs move into the favorite category, and then are replaced by another from the same album. For many years back in the 70s and 80s, there were bands and solo artists who gave us music that was lyrically deep, rhythmically interesting, and had solo sections that lifted the song dramatically and emotionally. While it is rare, I know there are still some versions of this approach to music alive. I have not found one more inspiring and engaging than “our brief span of time” by Bobby Read.
Every time I listen to this album I am brought close to tears by a newly heard vocal, lyric story, or virtuosic solo or duet. I am lucky enough to have known Bobby for decades, and I have followed his music through the years and through several albums. All of them are innovative in the genre they most resemble, but this one….this one has me so moved, I sometimes have to stop listening and just sit in the moment he has brought to me. If ever melody is a story, which you can follow, and which brings you to a new moment, these melodies are it. If ever authentic lyrical thoughts are communicated in a way that you can map them on to your life experience, they are here. Please my friends and anyone who reads this, pick up a copy of this masterpiece and give it a listen. I think you will be as moved as I am.

Genre-Defying
"Straight Ahead Is the Future" and "And the Angels Shout" are standouts here, but all the songs in this genre-defying aggregation of new Bobby Read compositions are, quite obviously, the result of top-notch musicianship and--because Read also engineered and mixed all of these tracks--the kind of attention to detail that is sure to please even the most devoted--and exacting--audiophile.
