Album Notes
The Swallowtail

The Swallowtail is a true story. A couple of years ago, I took a frozen tree into the house in late December to decorate, and a few of hours later, a beautiful yellow butterfly emerged. He lived in the house for the duration of the Christmas holidays. Sometimes he would vanish for a day or so, and then show up again. I put out small dish of fruit, and he spent a lot of time on some broken orange pieces which seemed to sustain him. He was to me, a living metaphor – how could I not write a poem about him?

And so I did. It was originally recorded by Lennie Gallant, who did a fantastic job. This year I wanted to put something out for Christmas, and so I decided to record my own version on October 18th in the Charlottetown studio of Chris Corrigan, a well-known guitarist and producer who has worked with the likes of Natalie MacMaster and Rita MacNeil. This time, however, I wanted music behind it, and was fortunate to recruit Tony McManus, who is originally from Scotland, and who is considered to be the greatest Celtic guitarist in the world. Tony recorded his part in New York in the studios of Jerry Marotta, who has worked with such up-and-coming artists as Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Iggy Pop and Carly Simon.

Tony and I are planning a full CD project of Christmas poems, short stories and music, which we hope to release in 2019.

This single is an equal collaboration. My contribution is the poetry, and Tony’s is the music. We are both looking forward to working on the full Christmas project for next year.
