ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Describing themselves as ‘one of the most unique and original bands in New York’ BNB certainly live up to that description. Bandleader Tom Gould's songs often have an indefinable quality, bouncing from pop to jazz to world rhythms - sometimes within a single song. Constantly re-inventing themselves, the Bossa Nova Beatniks are a very dynamic live act as well. Expect a wide range of emotions and rhythms to flood from the speakers.

Write a catchy title...
There are bands out there with a serious tone and message to convey. Others are like an unstoppable party or full of rebellious angst. Then there are bands that just want to play music that is inherently fun. Enter the Bossa Nova Beatniks. Coming together in Greenwich Village in 1992, the Bossa Nova Beatniks have been playing in and around New York ever since. They recently released their latest album 'Surfin' NYC,' an 11-track record that takes things back to a simpler time when music was just fun.

This is a band that embraces various genres within their music such as surf, bossa nova, jazz and beatnik styles. On 'Surfin' NYC' you can definitely hear all of these elements, along with some great guitar riffs, bongos and very skilled bass. A couple of standout tracks for me were 'Talkin' Bout You' and 'The American Dream (The American Way).' Throughout the album the theme is clear; embrace your passions and have fun. That's something I think we don't do enough of these days, so it is nice to hear a band trying to pass along feel good tunes.

Bossa Nova Beatniks are: Tom Gould - Bass & Vocals, Jerry Dugger - Bass & Vocals, Skip Krevens - Guitar, Brother Dave - Guitar, Bakithi Kumalo - Bass & Percussion, Tim Stapleton - Percussion & Vocals, George Vahamonde - Drums

You simply must enjoy to the fullest from the very beginning to the end.
A loose translation of Rootstime magazine - Belgium

The young man on the '1960 Thunderbird' stands in the famous New York ' Times Square ' is Tom Gould, the central figure of the band 'Bossa Nova Beatniks' from the U.S. State of New York. In 2018, he is already graying with children and grandchildren, but the musical sense of catchy pop and rock songs for several decades remains unchanged for him.
On the website of 'CD-Baby.com' you can find the impressive list of CD’s that began in 1992 in Greenwich Village formation over the years, beginning with their debut album "Heart To Beat" from 1996. If the count is a bit right, we now have the 'Bossa Nova Beatniks' seventeenth album under the title "Surfin' NYC". This CD comes two years after their previous "For the Fun" CD and is also again especially about making fun and entertainment for their many fans.
The current line-up of the band consists of singer and song writer Tom Gould from guitarists Skip Krevens and Brother Dave, bassist Bakithi Kumalo, percussionists Jerry Dugger and Tim Stapleton and drummer George Vahamonde. For the recording of the new album, however, a lot of friendly New York Guest instrumentalists got the job done. There’s a total of eleven tracks on "Surfin' NYC", of which one is a cover version of the famous Beatles' number, "Don't Let Me Down" (see video).
That the 'Bossa Nova Beatniks' are a party group is proven again in the most dynamic songs on this record. In these often less fun times, enjoy blown from the bluesy songs like opener "Baby, What'd You Do", "Talkin' Bout You", "Any Road (is taking you home)", "The American Dream (The American Way)", "Jack Jack", "This Cruel World" and final song "You're the Reason.” This is yet another disc of this band that you simply must put immediately in the cd player to enjoy to the fullest from the very beginning to the end.
The original review in Dutch
In deze vaak minder leuke tijden is het volop genieten geblazen van songs als de bluesy opener “Baby What’d You Do”, “Talkin’ Bout You”, “Any Road (is taking you home)”, “The American Dream (The American Way)”, “Jack Jack”, “This Cruel World” en slotsong “You’re The Reason”.
