Ants on the Drum

by Bradley Andrews

This song is from my first album, a collaboration with another artist named Michael Shohan. The song tells the story of a vision quest I took in Eastern Washington. Climb the mountain, touch the sun, listen to the ants on the drum!

Album Notes
In the native traditions, young men would go on a vision quest to find their purpose in life, to find their connection to spirit. When I was in my 30's I went on my own vision quest in eastern Washington. I climbed to a shelf on a mountain side where I sat and fasted for a day and a night. I had a hoop drum with me that I had set on the grass and the afternoon sun warmed the skin of the drum head and pulled it tight. An ant fell into the drum and was moving across the skin of the drum head trying to get out. It was very still on the mountain side and I sat there for a long time listening to the tiny sound of the ant's feet as they moved back and forth across the drum head. This song came from that experience.
