ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Brendan Nolan has been singing, performing, and writing for over 30 years. Though much of his material is traditional he has written some memorable songs. Most notable are his Irish famine song "Far From Their Home" written about Grosse Isle, an island in the St. Laurence River in Quebec, that was used as a quarantine station during the latter part of the 1840's. He has also written the beautiful song "Old Ned" about the last Horse and Milk-Cart on the streets of Dublin.
As the late Tor Jonassen of WRDV noted, "It shouldn't amaze me that those who do their traditional home work always create the best songs, that tell stories and have music that matches the song." Nolan has also chosen carefully the traditional songs he has recorded. Steve Winick of Dirty Linen noted, "Brendan Nolan can't be chastized for singing only well-known songs .......... a sweet and powerful voice"
On his latest live recording at the Palladium in St. Petersburg, Florida, he is joined by ace fiddle, flute and whistle player, Colin Farrell. They perform as if they'd been playing together for years, when in fact they had only met a few months previously. Colin brings a new demension to the songs with his inspired backing. Just listen to their stirring version of "The West's Awake" and the lovely way his fiddle combines on Nolan's original song "If I had a Garden." He also plays three sweet and lively jigs on whistle. One of his original tunes "The Side Door Jig" is featured with the track "Lanigan's Ball."
