Brian Levy Bio

Saxophonist Brian Levy recently released his debut CD, “Brian Levy Plays” and recorded his second. The recordings featured David Santoro, Hamir Atwell, Mikan Zlatkovic, and James Oblon. Brian is featured on four instructional jazz improvisation videos by world-renowned saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi.

He has performed frequently throughout his career. The highlights of this year were a performance at “Hinterhalt” in Munich with a quartet he co-leads with Max von Mosch, a John Coltrane/McCoy Tyner Tribute featuring Ralph Penland, and a jazz fusion concert with Mikan Zlatkovic. Brian has also performed at “Birdland” in New York City and was featured at an international jazz festival in Serbia. Brian has performed with a wide-range of musicians and groups including Ralph Penland, Gilbert Castellanos, Mikan Zlatkovic, Hamir Atwell, Joe Bagg, Kevin Kanner, Adam Nussbaum, Tim Collins, Henning Sieverts, Rick Hollander, Dave Santoro, George Gruntz Big-Band, and more.

In addition to being a performer, Brian has taught jazz performance, improvisation, history, and theory courses at the New England Conservatory, Harvard University, and Brandeis University.

He earned a Doctorate (The New England Conservatory) and Masters Degree (Manhattan School of Music), and is currently working on a PhD (Brandeis University). His instructors have included Jerry Bergonzi, David Liebman, David Santoro, Garry Dial, and Dick Oatts.

Levy has received several awards and scholarships including a Mellon Fellowship and University Prize Instructorship (Brandeis University), Presidential Scholarship (Manhattan School of Music), and Merit Scholarship (The New England Conservatory).
