Back to the Cross

by Brian Mark Weller

Lyrically, "Back to the Cross" is about getting right with God. It's about putting God first in our lives. Musically, it's folk rock, with some fine acoustic instruments, some great electrics and lots of harmonica!

Album Notes
While writing the songs for Back to the Cross, I was looking back at times, I had drifted from my love and commitment to my Lord Jesus Christ. Times I was living in compromise, as a lukewarm believer but pretending to be spiritual. That's what the song "Back to the Cross" is about. It's about remembering what it was like confessing my sin and getting right with God. It's about recalling how much time I wasted on foolish things. It's about being forgiven and making a fresh and loving commitment to Jesus Christ.

The lyrics of "Back to the Cross" led to the next song, "Ready or Not." In this song, I remind myself and listeners that Jesus Christ is coming back. He is returning whether we're "Ready or Not." It reminds us that it is our responsibility and our calling to be ready for the return of Jesus. Philippians 2:10-11 says "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

"My Treasure" is a song about my relationship with the Lord. It is a song of thanks and praise for God's forgiveness and restoration. It is a love song to Jesus, and He is "My Treasure". It is a worship song and one I pray many will sing to the Lord of all, Jesus Christ.

"Worry" the last song on the album is different from the others both musically and lyrically. That's why I put it last. I wanted to leave listeners with the idea that they don't have to worry today or any day. Using some humor and sarcasm, I point out that worry is counterproductive. "Worry" It is a fun song, but one I pray will encourage believers in Jesus to trust God in all things. Jesus told us not to worry because He is in control! He not only promised He would take care of us, but also promised that worry would not change a thing. Worry, fear and anxiety have no power to change things for the good.

Here is what Jesus said about worry in Luke 12:22-26 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?"

I pray these songs encourage, comfort and challenge you. I also pray you enjoy listening to the songs, the way I enjoyed writing them and recording them.

It was a blessing having my son JJ Weller play electric guitars and my daughter Megan Sayler sing background vocals on the first three songs of the EP. God bless you as you listen! Brian
