1) The Crow Who Stayed Too Long
Catchy little number about the opportunistic nature of man.

2) Freckles On Her Shoulders
The origins can be traced back to Melissa Gilbert—Laura from Little House On The Prairie, my first tv crush. Also, Jamie H., who brought Carly Simon’s 45, “You’re So Vain,” for show n’ tell in 3rd grade.
I tried to capture the Frankie Valli produced by Phil Spector vibe, without the reverb or guns.

3) The Best Thing (That Never Happened To Me)
Sometimes things happen or don’t happen just they way they should or shouldn’t, despite our own wishes or objections.

4) Your Next Mistake
“You know that I can read between the lines on your face.”
Fellas, with an opening line like that, you’re bound to score!
You’re welcome.

5) Ain’t Sweatin’
If it’s a good thing and you know it, you have nothing to worry about. If it’s something you have to worry about, it’s probably not a good thing.

6) Gawking At The Accident
Ever experience something so sad, upsetting, numbing, devastating and unbalancing that it feels like you’re watching it happen to someone else? Me neither.

7) Keep The Beat
“Dance, dance—while you still got the chance.”
Gotta try to make the most of our brief visit. No sense in wilting before you have a chance to bloom. As Jim Morrison so eloquently put it, “No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn.”

8) Picture Window
“She drops her doll and turns slowly from the picture window.”
Can a damaged kid avoid becoming a damaging parent? Hope so.

9) Stoop Cat
A cautionary tail...
Would love to eventually have this one animated.

10) Tug Of War
There are plenty of tug of war songs, but none coming from the perspective of the rope, at least not that I’m aware of.

11) Higher And Higher
Ok, so I’m no Jackie Wilson, but the delivery is honest and reverent, and in spite of my limited abilities, it came out sounding fairly tolerable, with the help of some talented friends. Always one of my favorites as a kid, and still to this day.
A fine way to end the album on a positive note.
