Album Notes
The title “Brain Scan” has no cerebral meaning here. It is merely a play on word with
my name, Brian Scanlon. The music, however, has deep meaning to me and is the
result of decades of work as a saxophonist, mostly in the LA area. Of the nine tracks,
eight are original. The musicians I chose for this project are colleagues and friends
who I have worked with for years. On a personal note, my 21 year old son, guitarist,
Avery Scanlon, is featured on two tracks , including the title tune. I believe the result
offers a personal and heart felt insight into my musical mind with some memorable
performances by these incredible musicians. This recording is lovingly dedicated to
my brother, Mark, who fell victim to the AIDS epidemic in 1992.

Below is a brief description of each track. I am featured on alto or tenor saxophone.
1) Brain Scan – an energetic, open jazz feel featuring Avery Scanlon on guitar
2) El Entrometido – a blend of latin and swing, ¾ and 4/4, featuring Tom Ranier
on piano, Peter Erskine on drums and Joey De Leon on congas.
3) Re-entry – a straight -eighth homage to two heroes, David Sanborn and
Grover Washington, Jr. featuring Andrew Synowiec on guitar
4) Not Watching – an airy ballad featuring Andrew on guitar
5) I Hear Something – a hard driving swing tune based on a popular standard
featuring Tom on piano and Peter on drums
6) Harlem Nocturne – a new take on an old classic featuring Tom on piano and
Peter on drums
7) Mark’s Time – a pavane with a jazz ballad feel featuring Larry Koonse on
guitar and Trey Henry on bass
8) My Right Foot – a loose swing groove featuring Ed Czach on piano
9) Scandalized – a straight eighth slow song with James Bond overtones
featuring Ed on piano and Avery on guitar
