Album Notes
Broke Royals never intended to fuel a political revolution with their first release. For Philip Basnight and Colin Cross, The Luxury of Time Pt. I, embodies the familiar realization of early adulthood that time is both an abundant and precious commodity. But halfway across the world, as a military coup overcame Thailand’s people in May of 2014, its citizens heard Broke Royals’ debut single, “About Time”, through different, more harrowed ears. As the song’s soaring chorus and pounding drums unexpectedly and rapidly circulated online across the asian country, Basnight and Cross realized that what had begun as a personal musical undertaking between two friends was now something closer to universal.

Basnight and Cross have been playing music together since early 2014, elevating each other’s talents from every angle. As the owner of Unkempt & Overcaffeinated Studios, Colin has been able to transcribe Basnight’s prolific songwriting and acoustic sketches into richly layered, energetic, and stirring tracks. From inception to masterful finishing touches, Cross and Basnight have exercised complete ownership over their songs and sound while flourishing as a creative, complementary duo. In live settings, Basnight’s warm and compelling vocal presence balances Cross’s driving and tom-ridden drum techniques, culminating in full-bodied anthems.

Since the release of The Luxury of Time Pt. I in the fall of 2014, Broke Royals has been constantly polishing and evolving their creative partnership. This summer, The Luxury of Time Pt. II. sees the duo continue to explore a thematic fascination with youth and temporality through a seamless flow of vibrant melodies and commanding beats. In Pt. II, Broke Royals delivers another round of synth-stimulated rock tunes that deeply satisfy, creating a kind of musical postcard that captures life’s poignant, ephemeral moments in lasting detail.
