Album Notes
You may not know Steve Brooks by name, but you’ve probably heard his songs. They’ve been recorded by Russell Crowe (One Good Year) and Austin Americana artists like Slaid Cleaves (One Good Year, Everette) Albert & Gage (Wings of War) and Danny Santos (This Memory of You, Hungry for Love), as well as Emily Kaitz, Kevin So, Marilyn Rucker, Dave Hooper and Jessica Shepherd. He was heard on coast-to-coast radio on Jim Hightower’s late, lamented talk show, where he wrote a song-a-week about events in the news.

Now, Brooks, is stepping out with his first studio album in a dozen years. In the great tradition of Texas singer-songwriters, "Chasing Grace" is a poetic journey of loss, longing and discovery. Producer Chris Gage, of Austin duo Albert & Gage, brings to life an exceptional collection of songs, with help from sidemen like Richard Bowden, Tom Pittman, Eddie Cantu and Courtney Audain.

The songs range from the mystical (Walking With the Elders, Precious) to a honky-tonk romp (One More Shot of Whiskey). But the heart of the album is a cycle of songs about love lost (Dark Side of the Heart, Will I Ever Love That Way Again?) found (Bottomless Love, The Other Shoe) and nurtured (Riding Out the Storm, Love is a House). Also included are Brooks’ soaring version of "One Good Year" and a companion hard-luck tale, "Iowa Wind."

Writes Stave Magazine, “Brooks is a master lyricist…Ordinary themes, settings and ideas take on monumental themes via perfectly placed words riding on catchy tunes.”

Brooks has written music for two films and appeared in two more, including the 2004 release "Barbecue: A Texas Love Story." A master of words as well as music, he was featured on TV's "I've Got a Secret" as six-time winner of Austin’s O.Henry Pun-Off World Championship. When he's not in a coffeehouse or a beer joint, you can catch him behind a pulpit, guest-preaching on topics like songwriting and spirituality.
