Album Notes
Ancient Algorithms blends the two greatest systems of music - western classical jazz and harmony with Indian melody and rhythms - via new and original compositions by Broto Roy. Beginning with variations on a classical theme the music continues with funky jazz featuring sax, sitar, bass and drums. Next, in three movements with sitar, sax, bass and tabla, is a piece based on a scale (raga) "Malkaus" from India. Ending with a pure blend of both systems is another original piece "Make It Better" with piano, sax, bass, drums, guitar and tabla.
Here is what others have said about Broto Roy's:
About my CD “American Raga”:
“trance-inducing, jazzy & intricate and the energy level is surprisingly high. Fans of uncompromising fusion, sophisticated percussion or fiery jazz guitar will not be disappointed." Ed Kopp - All About Jazz
"spiritual and visceral" - Mike Joyce, The Washington Post
About my CD “Total Immersion”:
"…every track is well arranged and the overall impact is great." The Statesman (India)
"Will extend your listening horizons" - Takoma Voice
About some of my live concerts:
"Concert mythique et magique." – EuroNews
"The young South Asian percussionist Broto Roy, an accomplished navigator of a range of multi-directional pathways between East and West - not only to a new range of aesthetic references, but also to new instruments and performance styles as well. After appearing in America, Europe and India with the folk group Ganga, with major classical Indian musicians and with the jazz-based East-West Ensemble, Roy continues exploring new rhythmic embellishments and ideas." The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC
"The complex rhythm seems to flow in and out of improvisations that can have the swing and fire of Bird one moment or the discipline of Ravi Shankar the next." "Truly original." - District Curators
About one of my commissioned works:
"Awesome!" "Grammy bound" - CNN
