Album Notes
The Official Reltone Biography

Brownbird Rudy Relic is a bluesman unlike any other, a straightedge Vegan Chicano purveying traditional acoustic blues music. A teenage punk rocker-cum-blues street busker, his songs were born in the bowels of punk rock house shows, Subway platforms and the streets of New York City.

Brownbird’s music is all passion - an amalgam of pre and post war blues influences with an emphasis on emotive minimalism, a style he calls “Holler Blues.”

His self produced recordings are warm and gritty, a sonic style dubbed as "anti-stereo" and comprised of a purely mono sound that is the product of 2 vintage Unidyne 55s and an archaic Ampex Reel to Reel deck.

In a manner uncommon among blues composers, Brownbird’s songs owe as much to the poetry of Plath and Neruda as they do to the pumping anomalous holler of Charley Patton or the Ragtime infused hokum of the Bluebird beat. They owe as much allegiance to the street corner serenades of long lost Doo Wop as they do to the grandiose drama of Mexican romantic ballads.

Brownbird has played such notable venues as the Knitting Factory and CBGBs, toured internationally, regionally and spends much of his time on the road, jumping from his home base of New York City to all points near and far.

Traditional blues is back!
Brownbird Rudy Relic's release takes you right back to the blues recordings of the 1930's and 40's. The mono-only and mostly single-mic recordings really highlight his style and talent for filling a room/your head with tasty sounds. However, there are a few tracks where it seems like the input gain was set a bit high, and you get a bit of vocal distortion, taking away from the amazing timbre of Brownbird's vocal stylings and powerful projection ability. Every tune on here rips, and many will quickly become your new favorite, as Brownbird truly has a talent for catchy lyrics. A must-have for anyone who like traditional blues or lo-fi music with tons of passion.

Truly Brilliant Blues!
In an era where commercial music is almost totally overwhelmed by easy listening pop hits, banal regurgitation, and second rate copy cat profiteers, it is rare to experience a truly brilliant musical occurrence. Well, Brownbird Rudy Relic’s “Anti-stereo Acoustic Holler Blues” is definitely one such occurrence. While Brownbird often identifies himself as working solidly within the country blues tradition, the abundant material on this album defies such simple categorization. His songs are like tragic micro-operas combining themes of love, loss, sadness and revelation in exceptionally original ways. His arrangements are spare, striking mergers of dramatic and soulful vocal stylings with more “countrified” resonator and kazoo accompaniment resulting in a truly unique rendering of the blues idiom. Self recorded on ancient mono recording equipment, the album has a warm and gritty sonic character that perfectly fits the material. In sum, “Anti-stereo Acoustic Holler Blues” is a supremely refreshing and original work by this highly talented and totally engaging blues artist. A definite must hear.

A New, Natural, Fresh, Progression of the Blues.
Not only is this a phenomenal release, the artist is an amazing performer. I had the chance to see him after purchasing the CD and I must say: WOW! The only blues guy nowadays that I know of who is doing anything worthwhile or "fresh".

The only blues CD that my wife doesn't roll her eyes about. That says a lot!

How would I describe it? Think old style blues with a new set of spectacles. BEST OF THE NEW (old) BLUES!

A Bona Fide Blues Sensation!
Let me state this succinctly as to avoid confusion: Brownbird Rudy Relic is the premier bluesman on the scene today. There are few that can match his sincerity or emotional ferocity – his music stands alone. This is not mimicry; this is the real deal! His debut Anti-Stereo Acoustic Holler Blues is the living, breathing testament to this claim.

Amazing Contemporary Throwback - A Blues Best Bet!
I bought this CD after being turned on to him through myspace and was blown away by what this guy was doing. The CD is leaps and bounds above 99.9% of the blues that can be found in the traditional genre. He's not copping a style, this guy is defining one. Everything about this CD is amazing, the songwriting [all original, no overdone standards] the singing and the Mono recording style wrap it up nicely. It hits all marks! Highly reccomended!
