Magic Stew Liner Notes:

"Bruce is one of those artists who makes everybody else in the band sound better; the proverbial musician’s musician. I saw it first-hand for the 8 years we hosted a weekly blues jam together, always marveling at his ability to guide marginal players to moments of real inspiration. Of course Bruce had done the same for some of Chicago’s greatest blues players of the 70s and 80s, playing behind legends like Junior Wells, Lefty Dizz, Mark Hannon and many others. And it’s certainly the case here, as he coaxes standout performances from a stellar supporting cast that includes drummer Dave Harris, keyboardist Bill Cornish, and bassist Paul Merar. No surprise there. It’s what Bruce does best.

Some people will be surprised that this isn’t a blues record; I say, be glad it’s not. As the title implies, “Magic Stew” is all over the place – a mish-mash of styles and genres that’s as hard to describe as it is easy to listen to. I’ll leave it to others to discuss genres, techniques, influences and otherwise parse the “Stew” ingredients. Far more important is the pure joy that colors every chord, every line, every note of every song – the joy of a man whose found his place and is happy to be there. That’s the magic of “Magic Stew,” and Bruce Williams is the magic man."
