Album Notes
“Across the Purple Sky” has been a labour of love, a joy of a project. For as long as I can remember, people have made comparisons between my voice and Sandy’s and although they are by no means the same, there are similarities. I grew up in the 1960s, and Sandy was, of course, one of the hubs of influences from those paisley patterned, patchouli -scented times. I had been determined not to make a tribute or cover Sandy’s work as so many had already been there but a few things nudged me into changing my mind. At a charity festival in the Cotswolds, the organiser approached me and said that he would very much like to hear me sing “Who Knows Where The Time Goes” as during the early days of his and his wife’s courtship, it had become “their song”. Becoming friends, he continued to ask when I was going to record it for him. A conversation with a family member, now sadly passed, went along the same lines; “I wish you would . .” Then on Facebook in conversation with other musicians about which songs we wished we’d recorded, a member mentioned that he had always wanted to hear me sing “I Wish I Was A Fool For You. This sparked another conversation about which other songs I would like to do and it seemed the time was finally right. My sister Erin was more than up for the task. Most people know her as a fine Celtic fingerstyle acoustic guitarist and cittern/mandola player but know little of her past (and mine) in the Rock genre. Working on something like this meant we were able to touch base again (or should that be BASS?) for the first time in 30 years.

Thanks to everyone who has encouraged the project and to all the presenters who are giving it so much airplay... far too numerous to list but that’s a good thing!

Special thanks must go to;
VINCENT SALZFAAS of Peter Knight’s Gigspanner for his contribution on Banks of the Nile; painting the percussive picture we had in mind (but didn’t have the expertise to realise.)
ALYSON RAINEY of The Bailey Sisters for her beautiful and poignant violin outro on Quiet Joys of Brotherhood.
STAN TUNSTALL-OTTERBURN of Digital Dreams for producing the cover for us (not an easy feat at a distance but his patience seemed without end) Incidentally Stan also made an impromptu video on the album release date; (Sandy’s anniversary on 21st April 2013) splicing footage of Sandy and Bryony "together". We very quickly (and by this I mean a half hour turnaround) produced an appropriate “duet” which was posted on You Tube to help publicise the release. Perhaps one day, with permission, we will be able to do it “properly”.
Of course it goes without saying that I particularly wish to thank my big sister Erin without whom the album would not have been possible. Not only has she lent her magnificent instrumental skills, she has produced the album from start to finish and put up with my pickiness and prevarications. So, here it is; Across The Purple Sky with some of my, and I hope, your favourite Sandy Denny Songs. Will there be a second volume? Well “who knows…” ?
