ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This album of three musical mantras is quite a departure for Buck Baran. Except for the eccentricity, Buck’s toe-tapping 1960s-influenced melodic alternative pop-rock is nowhere to be heard. Instead there’s a late-1960s meditative spiritual influence giving structure to the electronic ambience, virtual voices and Indian instruments.

Mantra durations are set for a 20-minute meditative session. In the beginning, the theme “participants” introduce themselves and slowly build, where at mid-point the themes progress to a low-level state, then rebuild to an awakening end. Besides following a timeline event structure, Buck also focuses in on a range of musical note frequencies related to the organs and Charka energy centers of the body.

“From the Valley” is an Om-like hum coming from a virtual choir in the valley below. From the back of the valley, the knell of a soft bell beckons you into the cavern of water droplets. For a moment it’s you and the water droplets. Then the bell returns, leading you out of the cavern, past the voices, back to where you started.

“Electron Fireworks” places you in a battlefield of positive pulses where you confront your thoughts. At opposite ends, electrons chatter in preparation for emanation. The spark of a conducting coil sets the electrons arcing across the empty sky; back and forth, eventually fading into the pulses. Gradually the elements return carried on the caress of a solar wind where the electrons fizzle into a final pulse.

“Flying Carpet” takes you on a vibrating journey along the seven main strings of a sitar. Climb aboard with an ensemble of Indian percussion and listen as the sitar soars beyond thought, leveling off at a cruising altitude of turbulence-free waves. Reenter the atmosphere, landing at the beginning of the theme.

Engineered with meditation in mind, “Dreams Without Punctuation, Vol. 1” was mixed with a softened high-end while leaving the bottom-end untouched. Spatial effects, tempo-timed delays and cross-panning were employed. At the mastering stage, adjustments were made to create a slow-moving flux in dynamics. And each mantra is preceded by 10 seconds of silence giving the listener time to adjust to a comfortable listening position.

Excellent under headphones.
