ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Bucky Halker, Ph.D., is a singer-songwriter, performer, and scholar with fifteen recordings to his credit, including Welcome to Labor Land, a recording of Illinois labor songs from the past; and the all-originals Wisconsin 2-13-63, vols. 1 & 2; a 2012 personal tribute of original and cover songs "The Ghost of Woody Guthrie"; and this new release in celebration of the life, legacy and talents of Joe Hill. Bucky is also the author of "For Democracy, Workers, and God: Labor Song-Poems and Labor Protest, 1865-1895" and is the producer-scholar for the Folksongs of Illinois CD series.

Halker's arrangements and music on this project are intended to reflect Joe Hill's musical influences at the time. He uses a brass band with a Tin Pan Alley approach followed up with a traditional Swedish Choir (Joe Hill, a Swedish immigrant, wrote only in English, by the way) together with gospelly blues, alt country, a little folk and finally a modern turn at political punk. He tries to make each Hill song his own by getting inside the material and breathing new life into Hill's lyrics. You won't hear just a single strummy guitar on these tracks, but a variety of styles. He tries to stick to the original lyrics with the exception of one or two tracks where the organic process took over. Welcome to the Joe Hill Vaudeville Review!

Review from "Folker" magazine, Germany 2016

"This Americana revue features five spoken-word recordings and sixteen songs (many previously never recorded), illuminating the life and music of union activist, singer, and songwriter Joe Hill. Undertaken with a team of first-class studio musicians, the album is musically somewhere between Vaudeville Music Hall, church hymns, folk and country, and equipped with insightful liner notes. Excellent!" (Folker magazine, Germany 2016)

Exzellent!"
(Folker magazine, Germany 2016)

Even Utah needs to hear this...
A tremendous recording by Bucky Halker - a terrific singer-songwriter who deserves greater renown. Here, though, he's recorded songs of the labor martyr, Joe Hill, who was executed by the State of Utah in 1915. Halker strikes a balance of both making these songs as modern as ever while respecting their period. Much of it transports you to an early 20th C. music hall, especially Stung Right, The Tramp, Mr. Block and, most especially, My Dreamland Girl. Two tracks - The Preacher and the Slave and Workers of the World Awaken - include the Swedish Men's Chorus, giving the feel of being in an old-time labor hall. The balance of the tracks play to Halker's strength as an acoustic folk rocker, most especially on Rebel Girl and the disc's rollicking closer, There Is Power In A Union. The closing track is so strong that it may easier to just set your player on repeat. It's that good.
