Album Notes
Californiosos is a new group featuring Michael Vest and Farmer Dave Scher. With 14 generations of Golden State living under their collective belts, Michael and Farmer Dave are naturals at bringing the cosmic / poetic West Coast folk-jazz-psych sound, lovingly fusing the influences of artists like The Doors, Love, Ariel Pink, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and Devendra Banhart with the spiritual jazz of Pharaoh Saunders, Sun Ra, John Coltrane, and Kamasi Washington... breaking through to new cosmologies and multi-dimensional fields of LOVE.

Michael and Farmer Dave met high in the mountains outside of Los Angeles on the side of the 5 Freeway on the evening of New Year’s Day, 2001. With mutual friend, poet and painter Eric Ernest Johnson, they formed the poetry group Upright Apes, bonding over a love of West Coast culture and history, Eden Abhez, The Beats and Richard Brautigan, the channeled writings of Hathors, Pleiadians, and others, ancient sites (Giza, Chavin, and Gobekli Tepi ), as well as a deep appreciation of Indigenous First Nations peoples of the world, their spiritual practices + connection to the Earth.

This mutual love of the spoken word and celebration of ancient-future days and ways led to a paradigm-shattering trip to the Amazon rainforest in 2014, which helped give birth to the banner of artistic and creative sense of purpose that Californiosos holds high today:

We are part of all life, interconnected through time and space

This world is a crazy ride full of incredible adventure... live to the fullest!

It is the time of humanity’s great awakening, and we all have our part to play to usher in a new world of peace, LOVE, and harmony

The magic of ancient ways and future days is here inside of us NOW... time to pay attention!

On The “Californiosos” Name:

With her mountains, forests, coastlines, deserts, datura caves and gold rushes, silver screen Hollywood mythologies, Disney-imagineered adventure lands, Love-Ins, communes, and continual mind-melting technology revolutions, California, herself, serves as the perfect namesake and muse for the group, providing a treasure trove of influences to explore and dive into. Layers of unique and rich history await here at the Edge of the Western Dream, where tomorrow unfolds in waves crashing on the sand into a wild ever-expanding NOW... the bands name and essence celebrates this.... as if to say “ Oh, So California!”

The historical role of the poet and bard is to live at the edge of the forest, dance and commune with the wild and weird, and bring the news back to the people in the form of story and song.

In a culture primarily focused on “youth” and “new”, it can be surprising what parts of our shared human story get overlooked or left behind.... aspects of our true identity that are not only useful, but magical, incredible....and downright invaluable:

“Far away, across the world in a distant forest,

you left it there and the roots, they grew around it” - Californiosos (from “Dig It Up”)

What's next for humanity?

What is our true relationship to the Earth, the stars, and each other?

Tune in to Californiosos... let’s find out together!
