HISTORICAL NOTES ON THE CARNIVAL TABLEÑO
The town of Las Tablas is credited with originating the form of carnival with "tunasy" or opposing sides in the year 1799. This custom tableña first expanded to the other peoples of Azuero and eventually the entire Republic of Panama. The factions that divided the people took the names of Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo due to the topography of the town of Las Tablas.

At first, the sides of Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo gathered in private homes called "Castillos" or home abanderada of the day. There was dancing then going to the streets where "tunaba." Subsequently, La Calle Arriba de Las Tablas located his headquarters at the end of the current Bolivar Avenue, while La Calle Abajo was installed at the end of Calle Pablo Arosemena, in the place known as Punta Fogón.

The town of Las Tablas fully cooperated in the organization of the tunas, highlighting a group of people from 1935 led the organization of Calle Arriba de Las Tablas, known as "El Grupo de los 17". These then acted as a partnership with legal personality called "Society Calle Arriba de Las Tablas." The success of its activities is this tonada:

…"Que quemen velas
que quemen Cohetes
que vivan los 17
esta es la gente que si promete
que vivan los 17
esta es la gente de Calle Arriba
la gente más divertida.”
