ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Cal State LA Afro Latin Ensemble is dedicated to the performance of salsa, timba, Afro-Cuban, and Afro-Caribbean music. The repertoire ranges from classic danzones and early conjunto classics to contemporary salsa and timba charts.

Setenta is a collaboration between gifted students, distinguished faculty, and amazing guest artists. This recording features premier songs from the Cal State LA Afro Latin Ensemble' repertoire, and provides a musical perspective of the rich and complex Afro Caribbean culture. These pieces emphasize the various Afro Cuban styles - from revered classics to modern timba - and showcase the talent of our student musicians.

The album is enhanced by the presence of extraordinary alumni - José Arellano, Luis Bonilla, Alex Henderson, and Tony Shogren - who have made their mark as professional musicians and educators. Setenta also features performances by our faculty members, Iris Sandra Cepeda, Edgar Hernández, and Calixto Oviedo, who are highly-regarded educators and among the elite of Latin music. Lastly, we must thank the professional musicians featured in this recording who have enriched the educational experience of Cal State LA students by sharing their time and talent: Leider Chapotín, Gonzalo Chomat, Lily Hernández, Juan Karlos, Rachel López, Rigoberto López, Josiel Pérez, and Greg Samuel.

The Cal State LA Afro Latin Ensemble is directed by distinguished alumnus and professor of music, Dr. Paul De Castro.

Setenta is the second album to be released by the Cal State LA Afro Latin Ensemble under Aerie, the University's record label. The album is a celebration of Cal State LA's 70th anniversary.
