ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A Solo Piano release from Calvin Jones, 'Through High Places' represents a personal retreat, a hiatus from the hectic, fast-paced world into the solitude of the mountains. Fresh, original music with strong melodic content, Calvin's unique style incorporates classical direction so often missing in much of today's instrumental music, while delivering haunting, memorable melodies with spaciousness and tranquillity.

As one listener commented, "Through High Places will take you to Pike's Peak and leave you there!" With haunting originals such as "Again", "Snowmelt" and "Sunrise in the Rockies" as well as Calvin's interpretations of "O Danny Boy" and "Chopsticks" this continues to be one of Calvin's best selling releases.

Richard Morton reviews in MAC Issue 250 Volume 6

"Remember the old saw "the best way to get someone's attention is to whisper"? Pianist Calvin Jones thoughtful debut album "Through High Places" is a whisper deserving of your attention. Calvin's the first two fisted contrapuntal solo pianist to come down the pike in quite a while. While many of these compositions are gentle in nature, it would be unfair to toss this one off in the new-age stack. While it is true this record is closer to George Winston than it is to Bill Evans, he is still in between and therefore hard to pigeon hole. Check out the track "Whitewater Chopped Sticks," a very hipped up version of every beginners exercise. As I said, Calvin Jones can play with both hands, as he demonstrates on this track and indeed throughout this disc. It is nice to hear a piano player whose left hand is as strong as his right. "Londonderry Falls" also deserves your consideration. Your listeners will recognize the melody and the treatment is truly intriguing. "Sunrise In The Rockies" use of space and melody makes for a nice composition. Also check out "Mountain Memories," which builds from a flatlands sparseness into a Pike's Peak crescendo before returning to a prairie sunset. This is one of those records that is not supposed to happen. Contemporary logic says that the format is not adding solo piano records any more, especially not ones from micro labels. Not true. What our format needs is intelligent compositions played with style and grace. Calvin Jones fills the bill and at only 24, this guy's in for the long haul. Give this one a listen. "
