Canada has a rich choral tradition that draws from a wealth of cultures, perspectives and styles. The Capital Chamber Choir is committed to showcasing Canadian, local, and contemporary choral music. For our debut album, we have selected exclusively Canadian repertoire. The album provides a snapshot of the excellent choral works being created in this country, including pieces by some of our newest choral composers. It is fitting that we release this album in the year marking the sesquicentennial of Canadian Confederation. It is an ideal time to not only celebrate our past, but also look with anticipation toward an exciting future for choral music in Canada.

This album's title work, The Delight of Paradise by Ottawa's Nicholas Piper, is an ambitious and triumphant seven-movement sacred cantata. Its text is The Odes of Solomon, a Christian work that is almost as ancient as the New Testament, but considered heretical by the early church because of its gnostic theology. This colourful collection of sacred poetry was lost for many centuries; most of the 42 odes were only rediscovered in 1909. The Delight of Paradise sets the eleventh ode, full of powerful allegory and metaphorical imagery about the enlightening pursuit of spiritual knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. This work is truly a tour de force – a masterpiece of form, counterpoint, and harmony.

Jocelyn Morlock’s extraordinary piece Exaudi expresses the range of emotions experienced in grieving the loss of a loved one. The Capital Chamber Choir is fortunate to be joined by Canadian cellist, Brandon Wilkie, a long-time friend and artistic colleague of the ensemble.

We are very proud to be part of Ottawa’s thriving choral music scene, which includes a number of gifted composers, six of whom are highlighted on this album. We conclude with works by Ottawa-based composers Andrea MacWilliams, Christine Donkin, Timothy Mott, Kelly-Marie Murphy, and Steven Gellman, which explore themes of reconciliation, love, and peace.

The Capital Chamber Choir would like to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario, without which the production of this album would not have been possible.
