ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Out of the Blue is the debut CD release from positively soulful, singer/songwriter, Claudia Carawan. This collection of 11 songs takes the listener on a "feel good" journey with songs that touch the heart and soul. Carawan's lovely voice soars over beautifully-crafted pop, R&B and jazz arrangements.

Claudia Carawan is a positively soulful, singer/songwriter who creates music with positive, life affirming messages. Her tone & phrasing are simply captivating drawing comparisons to a variety of singers as diverse as (Eva Cassidy, Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones).

Her love affair with music began as a young child when she discovered a beat-up Silvertone guitar in her family's basement. While frequenting the coffee shops and venues of her native DC area, she devoured a variety of music genres. She became an avid fan of Americana "roots" music. Carawan studied classical voice at Virginia Commonwealth University but her love of the blues, jazz, and old-school r&b lured her away from a career as an opera singer. While in school Carawan developed her musicianship by studying piano and alto sax--both signatures of her sound. She attended the prestigious Jazz in July at University of Massachusetts where she learned about "music and life" from jazz legends Max Roach, Billy Taylor & Sheila Jordan.

Upon graduation she worked with numerous ensembles performing a wide spectrum of styles--blues, jazz & pop, etc. Her work fronting Li'l Ronnie & the Bluebeats helped make the band a regional favorite on the east coast. She also found success in advertising, singing jingles for local, regional and national ads.

As she continued to experience commercial success, she began honing her writing skills. Out of the Blue, her debut solo release is Carawan's upbeat collection that draws on her passion for soul, old school r&b, reggae & jazz. These genres, combined with her heartfelt lyrics (which lean heavily on messages of hope and inspiration) add new meaning to the expression "positively soulful."

When not on stage Carawan works part-time as a Music Teacher at the Charterhouse School, which serves "at risk" students, where she inspires students to discover and develop their creative abilities. She lives happily in Richmond with her husband, her daughter and her faithful dog, Gracie.

Press:

"She's got an incredible voice."
Michael Zitz, The Free Lance Star, Fredericksburg, VA

"Both sultry and righteous, sassy and pouting, Carawan's got a hair raising set of pipes. She sets a mood impossible to ignore."
Andy Garrigue, reviewer Richmond VA

"Precision, spontaneity and soul set her apart..."
Bob Keeton, Living Successfully Radio

"Carawan's got a penetrating voice and equally impressive alto sax."
Sonya Adkinson, Beachcomber In Town, Rehoboth Beach, DE

... your talent covers so many bases--writing, playing, and singing--that it's the whole package. Your songs are excellent, your voice and the way you use it are a wonder, and your production is outstanding. Congratulations on a fine piece of work, and letting your talent loose on the world for the rest of us to enjoy. Greg Tamblyn, Recording Artist/ Humorist/Writer www.gregtamblyn.com

I could not let another day go by without telling you how fabulous your CD is. Wow! I have been blasting it in my car ....I’ve hit replay on "Everything I Need" so many times that I have it memorized. So excellent! Rev. David Ault, Recording Artist/Writer/Minister www.davidault.org

Congratulations on a great project - Out of the Blue. It is my new favorite CD! Your voice is really awesome and you are a great songwriter too. I especially like your simple R&B style. It is refreshing to hear songs with depth and meaning in that genre. It was well produced and engineered. I'd play it next to any artist out there! -Richard Mekdeci, Recording Artist & President, EmPower Music Ministries www.empowerma.com

Great CD
Perfect combination of lyrics, music and performance. Powerful but perfectly controlled voice. Touching in places ("The People who Love You" and "I Wish You Well") and tour de force elsewhere ("Brighter Day.")

An absolute success.
