“A lovely collection of miniatures for guitar, syntheiszers, and percussion, processed through various types of studio devices. The two members of Delay Tactics wax gentle, but not restrained or understated. There is plenty to keep the listener engaged and involved. The starting point for Weingarten’s guitar is Robert Fripp in his more lyrical moments. However, Weingarten is a distinctive guitar stylist, carving out smart and well-crafted lines and figures. He is never simply derivative or imitative. Whitney’s supportive keyboard textures and harmonies are dreamy, yet thoughtful. The two musicians put together a full, but not dense, fbric of elegant sound. They manage to maintain just the right balance between textures, rhythms, harmonic movement, and well-crafted melody, so that the music is neither too busy or simplistic. --Dean Suzuki, Option Magazine.”

"Having listened to the pre-master of the CD you now have and re-visited my original capsule review from 1986 I find it still accurate, if incomplete. The combination of electric guitar and synthesizer, not to mention various studio treatments and sound processing, is clearly informed by the landmark recordings by (Robert) Fripp and (Brian) Eno, (No Pussyfooting) from 1973 and especially Evening Star from 1975, with its shorter vignettes. The repetitive loops and processing provided by Eno coupled with Fripp’s improvisations were the template for Weingarten and Whitney. Indeed, “Mermaid” and “Dreaming in Colors” might be mistaken for outtakes from Evening Star.

Fripp’s guitar work clearly influences Weingarten’s, but one can also point to the work of the remarkable Norwegian jazz guitarist and stylist, Terje Rypdal, as a point of reference (check out “Pathways” and especially “Rainsong”) as well as David Torn, Richard Pinhas (Heldon) and Manuel Göttsching (Ash Ra Tempel). Weingarten and his brothers in spirit clearly value color, sonority, texture, character, mood and atmosphere as much as the pitches and “chops.” And it is great to have Weingarten strapping on an electric guitar again as he does on the recentish bonus track, “New Colors”, after a spate of CDs in recent years focusing on the acoustic dobro played with a slide.

Whitney’s synthesizers perfectly complement and balance Weingarten’s guitars. While Eno’s soundscapes are certainly a model, Whitney’s contributions are often more rhythmically assertive and clearly outlined than Eno’s. At different times, Whitney’s synthesizer parts are analogous to those found in so-called “kosmische Musik” or “krautrock,” including the work of Klaus Schuze, Tangerine Dream, Cluster (whence Han-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius), Ash Ra Tempel, Harmonia, among others, as well as those of Steve Roach, Stomu Yamash’ta and even Ryuichi Sakamoto. No doubt, Weingarten and Whitney are in very good company.
