ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Earth Calling is a collection of children's songs to inspire the next generation to think about the planet and their roll in it. The songs are catchy and heartfelt - each one lovingly crafted, with imaginative instrumental arrangements played by some of London's top session musicians.

Notes by Caroline Chan (Singer - Songwriter)

Why this album?

All the songs on this EP have been a few years in the making and are about a subject I care passionately about. Taking care of the planet and looking after the world we live in feels like such an important current issue and I was surprised I couldn't find more songs about it.

Having kids and grandchildren, and working in a children's environment, I find myself increasingly concerned about the negative effects of technology and the developing world on our planet. Many of us have watched programmes like 'Blue Planet' and are now realising change has to happen.

Kids seem interested in having discussions and trying to find a solution and I hope the songs could be a great way for the next generation to start thinking and talking about the planet, and what we can all do to take care of it.

I grew up listening to and singing the songs of Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Peter Paul and Mary & Leonard Cohen. Songs such as ‘Big Yellow Taxi’, Sounds of Silence’, ‘Times They are a Changing’, ‘Blowing in the Wind’ had something important to say and spoke to a whole generation.

I truly believe that music can play a huge part in bringing about change and starting much needed conversations.

Notes by Sophie Ryan (Producer/Arranger)

Caroline had already been writing and developing these songs for a couple of years when I agreed to work on them with her, so I wanted to take care to produce them with as much energy and imagination as I could. As well as feeing inspired by the subject matter and Caroline’s very infectious passion for the project, my big interest was having live musicians playing on the songs. This was incredibly important to me – we live in a world of amazing technology where you can easily create music with just a laptop, but I really wanted to give the children a chance to hear lots of different instruments, all played by fantastic professional musicians, when listening to these songs.

I feel very lucky that the most wonderful group of musicians agreed to be involved. Each track features elements of a variety of different musical genres and styles. I hope this gives the tracks a whole extra dimension and layer of things to listen out for and enjoy. Caroline wanted some of the local children, with whom she had already been playing and developing the songs with, to be involved with the recording so it is quite an eclectic mix.

She was also very keen that the arrangements included some unusual instrumentation – in particular, and very fittingly, homemade instruments made of recycling and everyday household items. Every track includes instruments that anyone could make and play so you don’t need an expensive instrument or musical background to have a go and join in if you feel like it.

Our hope is that children and parents alike might enjoy listening to and joining in with these fun yet meaningful songs.
