A Note from Catfish:

Alright! Welcome to this, my 18th album. This record was a satisfying journey. It’s a mix of several original songs as well as favorite classic pieces, some freshly worked up, and a few that I’ve known by heart, for decades.

My process of discovery comes from a lifetime of digging way down deep in the treasure trove of the best Delta blues, old time country songs, gospel, and even down island pieces. Songs I wrote recently, and going back as far as a dozen years. Penny found some of my songbooks in the back room, and there were a bunch of fully formed songs I had written, and halfway forgot about, all ready to go. I didn’t change a word, just turned them, again, into music.

A lot of my songs come from, or are inspired by, scratchy old records, from the earliest days of blues, jazz and folk music. Not only great guitarists and singers like Big Bill Broonzy, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Johnny Shines, Blind Blake, Bo Carter, and Furry Lewis, but also exciting bands of the day such as the Nassau String Band, Cannon’s Jug Stompers, The Carter Family and much more, all arranged here for solo guitar, vocals, and feet.

The music I fell in love with as a kid is the same music that I play today. The sounds of the ngerpicked acoustic guitar still fuels my re. Before I knew it was just one person making all of that sound, one guitar sounded to me like several, playing bass, rhythm, melody, harmony, counterpoint. I gured if I could just get a little of that sound, I would be over the moon.

I had the revelation to make music my life’s work when I was fteen, sixteen years old. Since then, I haven’t looked back. It’s been a fantastic life so far.

I recorded again at the wonderful Flat Black Studios, with our main man, Luke Tweedy. He makes it so easy, getting the very best quality sound, I couldn’t be happier. This is our fth project with Luke and long may we continue. We always have a ball doing it, laughing our asses o , and man, he just makes it sound so dang good. Thank you, Luke!

Biggest thanks of all, for the endless love and support of my Manager, Sound Engineer, and Pres. of Fish Tail Records, my beautiful wife, Penny Cahill.

Penny and I have been traveling the world together for over 30 years, taking the music as far as we can, and have been able to live a life that dreams are made of.

I hope you enjoy this album as much as I enjoyed making it for you.

yours truly, Catfish
