ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"My mind has a mind of its own," Catherine Conlin proclaims in the opening track of GIRL WITH A CAMERA, her third album released with her husband, Konstantine Baranov. GIRL WITH A CAMERA, three years in the making, was recorded in various studios from San Francisco to St. Louis and Moscow. During this three years, the couple traversed the U.S. a few times on road trips taking photos and memory images as they did.

Co-producers Konstantine Baranov and Steve Nye provide space for Conlin's feral nature to be expressed in a domesticated manner layering shimmering guitars and pianos, violins, drums and horns. Conlin tells stories about perspective, "You thought that she thought that you thought that she thought," in You Tell the Truth. She questions, "Why do you have to make things so complicated? Do you have to throw stones across still water just to feel your self?"

Conlin has come a long way from her first album in 2005 with her band Bedtime Story, which West Coast Performer reviewed as the worst album of the year. This review made Conlin and her band members proud but left Baranov wondering what he was getting into when they first met in 2008.

Baranov's skilled hand in AWE (2009) and PARTICLES OF DUST (2011) set Conlin on a more disciplined course. Adding Steve Nye (Penguin Cafe Orchestra, The Cure, Bryan Ferry, Japan and David Sylvian) to the mix on this third album as both musician and co-producer was a third component in this tripod upon which the camera stands.

The band will be presenting the album along with recently released THE KEEPERS (artbeat.ru) at several concert venues in Moscow at the end of this year, accompanied by their violinist, Ryan Avery (California) and a string of musicians from Moscow and Belgium.
